Philip Glass - Songs & Poems for Solo Cello - Wendy Sutter

This album consists mostly of so-called 'poems' for cello solo. It is an interesting experience, although less lush in texture than the usual symphonic works by Glass, and less moving than solo efforts such as the solo saxophone album. The album ends with several tracks (some of which not released on CD hitherto) from Powaqqatsi. All in all, this is a valuable item in a Philip Glass's afficionado's collection, but will probably be of little use to other people.

Mike Oldfield fans will readily recognize Tubular Bells side one in this classical music style composition. This is not, however, the orchestral version of Tubular Bells which we have already heard. It is a variation on the theme blending classical music with the modern guitar and the variety of instuments Mike Oldfield is known for. Fans of classical music will find something new and interesting here. Fans of Mike Oldfield will enjoy hearing Mike Oldfiled with a variation on the familiar theme in a new genre. Mike Oldfield says in his liner notes that he believes that this is the music that moves the spheres of the universe. I believe he is sincere as listeners will hear the familar haunting theme that runs through almost all of his music.

In this very humble devotee's opinion, Loreena McKennitt could sing "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" and it would sound as if inspired by a great poet of yore, sung by the priestess of a mystic goddess. Needless to say, all of her CDs receive my highest rating. The only difference between them in my estimation is that one or the other my have certain all time favorite songs or poems--and ALL of them feature a lot of those.

One thing that immediately stands out in AN ANCIENT MUSE is the degree of Middle Eastern musical phrasing, even more prominent than in NIGHTS FROM THE ALLHAMBRA.

I love the Middle Eastern sound.

I could not possibly meditate to this CD. Dr. Dyer's voice as he chants is awful. This is not relaxing or conducive to meditation! I found it very annoying.

Regardless of your personal spiritual beliefs, I believe this will help anyone who wants to stop habitual pattens in their life. Pema is charming, soft-spoken, humorous and non-judgemental. I like her style and I plan on picking up more of her work.

I bought this CD for my son a couple of years ago. My son, who is now almost 7, suffers from ADHD and Anxiety, and the anger and frustration that go with it. He STILL listens to this CD at bedtime at least 3 times a week. He LOVES IT! In his words, "It is soothing. I really like Bubble Riding because it is fun and I can imagine floating along in colorful bubbles." I personally like the Octopus' Garden as this one has really helped him control his anger and realize that he is not the only one who gets quickly angered. This CD gave him a fun and easy method to calm down and relax. Thank you so much! Kelly Giaquinto
