This Cd made me a Cello fan. It is relaxing "a lo Glass", (as usual). Before, I considered the violoncello an inferior
entity within the violin family, but now I have great respect for both, the instrument and Phillip. To me: definitely a 5 star.

Kaki King's debut album, Everybody Loves You, may be the best to showcase her talent as a guitarist/composer. As heard in probably the most prototypical track, "Kewpie Station," she taps the fret and the body of the guitar like a percussive instrument, plays unfamiliar chords, and structures the song with various odd beats that keep changing. To lesser extent, these ingredients are heard on "Steamed Juicy Little Bun," "Carmine St.," "Close Your Eyes," and "Joi." "Carmine St." also carries incredible counterpoint between bass line and melody, performed simultaneously without over-dubbing, while "Everybody Loves You" features Debussy-esque harmony. This is a solid greatest hits collection, with perhaps only one or two clunkers in the bunch. Very mellow, and great for listening to at work (especially if you work in Hawai'i, I suppose).

It's a cliche to say that discs like this take a listener to the islands, but it's a popular sentiment for a reason: This CD is like a vacation to Maui that you can take any time.

Andras Schiff continues to enthrall with his series of Beethoven Piano Sonatas. I highly recommend his lecture series, given at Wigmore Hall, and captured on the Guardian UK website. His in-depth exploration of these pieces is illuminating. I am most impressed in Schiff's passionate and pure takes on the lesser-known sonatas. His G Major Sonata, No 25, will thrill and delight the listener. I have nothing to say about the Appasionata - it is supremely played and lived. As for Les Adieux, the slow movement is heart-wrenching, and the last movement, the return, is a breath of fresh air. I cannot wait to hear these pieces live at Carnegie Hall this year.

Summer by George Winston is another stellar effort from the excellent solo pianist. Though this CD can be greatly enjoyed at any time of the year, it is appropriate that, right now, at the beginning Summer this CD can be greatly enjoyed. The songs and sounds here are really outstanding.
