Al Green is a soul legend. That's a fact. But I never found a compilation of him as perfect as this fine one. Here you can find all the great hits from this soul king born in Forrest City, Arkansas in 1946. From "Back Up Train" with the Soul Mates, to "Perfect To Me" recorded in 2004. The sound is perfect (all the tracks have been digitally remastered) and the photographies included in the cd are simply amazing.
21 tracks complete this strongly recommended cd from a man who symbolized the secular and the sacred that gave soul music its emotional power.

If the hologram snapping fingers on the cover don't give any indication of the lively, funky, toe-tappin' Southern soul that Stax put out, you should put on this box set for an introduction. For a very affordable price, it covers most of the major hits from the biggest artists of the label, including Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Booker T. and the MG's, Sam and Dave, Johnnie Taylor, and Isaac Hayes, and includes songs by less famous acts that you'd be hard-pressed to find represented by an easily available compilation. Stax was the best soul label ever, grittier than Atlantic and Motown, and with an exuberant, passionate spirit that made it all its own.

Redding's live performances of the mid-60s are surprisingly well documented. Individual pieces of his work on Stax's package tours of Europe can be heard on Live in Europe, The Stax/Volt Revue, Vol. 1: Live in London, the Ace Records collection 1,000 Volts of Stax, and the DVD Stax/Volt Revue Live In Norway 1967. His stateside performances have turned up on several Monterey Pop artifacts, and two albums worth of tracks document his shows at the Whisky A Go Go (1 2). What separates this new release from the rest is the full picture of Redding's set at the top of the Stax ticket. Stretching to over an hour, the nineteen tracks collect performances from back-to-back concerts in London and Paris, showing off not only the incendiary songs, but the excitement ... Read More:

This debut album from Aretha Franklin probably ranks with the greatest pop albums of all time (and yes, that group includes Ray Charles, James Brown, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Barbra Striesand, Jimmi Hendryx, Janis Joplin, The Supremes, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Tina Turner and even Bruce Springsteen)! From the scintillating "Respect" (a classic that successive, international generations will continue to rediscover and cherish long after the Queen of Soul is gone) to the heart-rending gospel of the title cut and "Drown in My Tears," to the country-soul of "Do Right Woman" to the gospel-samba of "Don't Let Me Lose this Dream," and the honky-tonk blues of "Good Times," this album is an astonishing and surprisingly varied ... This was (almost) as good an album as "Call Me" and "Let's Stay Together". The hit singles "Love and Happinerss", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and the title track helped make this one of Al Green's strongest sellers and a highlight of early-'70s Soul. The only song on this CD which can be labeled a near-miss is "For The Good Times" as it just doesn't hold up in comparison to the album's other tracks.

"Wilson Pickett's Greatest Hits," a compilation album, is unusual among its brethren compilation albums, in that the man really did have lots of greatest hits to compile: not everyone does. But the hits, as backed by the great Muscle Shoals rhythm section Atlantic had put together in the late 1960's, early 1970's, come rolling out here. "Hey Jude," despite all that screaming, better than the Beatles' original for some of us; "In the Midnight Hour;" the immortal, internationally loved "Mustang Sally," "Land of a Thousand Dances," "Funky Broadway," and "Midnight Mover." The man could sing. And, with the backing of the Alabama-based studio band, he can certainly serve as an exemplar of Southern soul music.
As a young man, Pickett demonstrated energy ... Read More:

Early in my career in the Army, I lived off post. All I had in my pad was a water bed, a component set, and three Al Green albums. What can I say? It was all that I needed. And this compilation is beyond words if you are an Al green lover. Willie Mitchell, the Hodges Brothers, and those Memphis Horns. Now, if you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to buy this CD. No doubt, it is The Absolute Best!
