I love classic Cumbia, and I love classic Garage rock. SO Im thrilled to discover this intersection of styles. THe peruvian folk meoldies are an added bonus. Candy!

Amongst all four Lila Downs releases so far, there is little doubt in my mind that this one remains an all time favorite.

Needless to say, I have become a huge fan, and all CDs by Lila and her fabulous band fully deserve five stars, period. But this one is the most indengenious one, the one of her roots, where her true character and amibition shine through in its most pure form.

I especially adore songs like La Sandunga with its magic touch, or Naila, maybe because I am a bit a sentimental guy. Anyway - buy all of her CD's, but give this one a special listen.

Hopefully, she will never burn out and continue with her wonderful voice and the intelligence and subtelty of her almost dylanesque or even taupinian lyrics. ... Read More:

Amazon price was lower than in stores and shipping was quick! I had never heard of this band until recently and this was their first CD ordered. It is a great CD! If you like the Gypsy Kings, you'll like this too!

This is truly an excellent cumbia collection. Every song is beautifully arranged and evokes a kind of nostalgia for this "music of the coast." If you are someone who values variety in a CD compilation, however, you might want to give the samples on this amazon website a good listen before you purchase the CD. While the cumbia songs are wonderfully pure and truly representative of this fantastic music, they do sound very similar (which isn't a surprise, of course, because this is a CD of cumbia!). If you like what you hear, then you should certainly get this disc. The music is rhythmically infectious, romantic and will definitely survive many rotations in your CD player. If you've never listened to Lou Reed before, this mightn't be where you want to start. The uninitiated would do better to pick up "Transformer," "Rock And Roll Animal," or "New York." However, if you are already a bona-fide Lou Reed fan looking to get a new, totally fresh perspective on the man, you are ready for "Street Hassle." I'd also apply the same caveat to "Take No Prisoners," his live album from this era: not for first-time listeners, but if you're ready for the real HEART of Lou Reed, it's all here.
"Gimme Some Good Times" starts proceedings in fine fashion, with Lou's quavering, overdubbed vocals casting a gritty pallor over a ultimately catchy tune. "Dirt," is my opinion, was better served in it's earlier form as "Downtown Dirt" from the Coney Island ... Read More:
