World fusion music generally involves the merging into one piece of divergent types of music from different countries. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes not; in this case, it does because the two musics represented here, raga (Indian classical music) and Persian classical music, are from closely neighbouring regions of the world. In fact, it works beyond the musicians' wildest dreams. The Rain is an amazing performance very much in the tradition of Middle Eastern and South Asian music.
Kayhan Kalhor (a master kamancheh player) and Shujaat Husain Khan (a 7th-generation master raga musician) are joined on these three extended pieces by Sandeep Das on the tablas. My only complaint is that no lyrics are included for us to get an ... Read More:

I like the variety of this CD. I'm glad there is a Music of Islam sampler CD, so I can listen to different types of music before I purchase the individual Music of Islam CDs (the set itself is pretty big and expensive).

This collection of Sufi music is superb; as the liner notes explain, Turkish music reflects the history of its relationship with Central Asia, and also the influence of Persian classical form with its elegance and purity, a combination which perhaps to the Western ear might sound extremely foreign. I find this fourteenth CD of the magnificent "Music of Islam" series to be soul-stirring and uplifting. If you enjoy this type of music, it is an ideal recording to minimize the din and sensory overload of the 21st century world.
These mystic Sufi hymns are sung with much beauty and piety, and with the backing of classical art music instruments, which are: The nay (oblique flute), with its whispery sound, the tanbur (a long-necked lute), the ... Read More:

This music is to be used to open yourself inwards. Yes, as some reveiwers have noted it is repetitious. It is simple and allows for a quieting of the mind. It is not designed to entertain but to provide an avenue for glimpsing the depth within. But it must be listened to as a meditation. I very much appreciated this funnel inward so to speak and use it in the early morning as the sun arrives. If the other makams become available let me know and I will love to have them.
Release Date January 11, 2000
Beautifully packaged, with classy, luscious graphic design and copious, highly informative liner notes, this handsome 2-CD set presents some of the world's greatest Sufi music from one of the most revered modern ensembles, the Ensemble Al-Kindi of Damascus, Syria. Sufi worshippers and fans of world music alike will find these albums quite compelling -- the music is drenched in transcendant, ecstatic spirituality, quite heartfelt and melodically rich. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This CD is a compilation of prayers for the common person's day-to-day affairs, such as before going to bed, after eating a meal. The english translation follows the Arabic. There are also a few nice nasheeds/songs. The only thing that would have improved this CD and allowed the listener to benefit from it even more is if it came with the written text of the prayers so the listener could learn them too. You can't really pick up the proper prononciation ecetera just by listening to the CD because its obviously read by professionals, so kind of at a fast pace. However, I know you can for sure find these prayers in books elsewhere, as they are all well-known. Overall, a nice CD to listen to that will hopefully inspire us to remember God in our daily activities just ... Read More:
