I've enjoyed listening to the CD so far. It makes me wish for a winter day, sitting on my couch in front of a fire, with a nice glass of wine and a great book and this music in the background.
I grew up listening to a lot of classical, and it's refreshing to have the "classical" sound without simply another group rehashing the same old melodies. Don't get me wrong, I love Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc. but I don't always want to hear them. This is a good alternative, and the extra flourishes and addition of vocals on a couple of the tracks kept me intrigued throughout my first listening.

Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!

As I type the words to this review, I am listening to Nessun dorma (Puccini, Turandof) over and over again from the CD collection I am now writing about. Good music is supposed to inspire, and this one inspires.
This six CD collection is from Best Film 100: The Great Blockbusters, The Classic Movies, Favorite Movies, The Piano at the Cinema, Opera at the Cinema (my favorite), and Baroque Goes to the Cinema.
The ironic part about listening to music from the movies is that it mainly goes unnoticed by people who would never claim to be classical or opera lovers in the first place. I'm sure that Mozart's, "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" fits perfectly in the movie "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," a movie I seem to continually miss, and it is ... Read More:

I have not bought this set, but I have heard all the music on it from other sources. The symphonies are good, but I was not sure what was on every disc since there is no listing on Amazon. I went to the Naxos website to see the track listings for the 4 cd's, and the 4th one had a listing of compostions by people other than Philip Glass. I am not sure if this is a mistake, or if the 4th disc actually has other music. It is questionable to say the least, so I am not going to buy this.

Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart are all too well known, but less known musics are blended well into this CD. That's why I bought this CD. I think this is a good CD to familiarlize myself to flute pieces, but as a serious classical music listener it may come in short as more than half of pieces in this CD are something too famous and were listened so many times. This CD can be used to know what I like and then move forward from there. I am the type of listener who listen to the entire Carmen of Bizet instead of listening to only one part or two of it. If a listener is unfamiliar with clessical music, I think this is a good one to start.

If there` s an emblematic quality that features Neeme Jarvi is his astonishing charisma and gentle sympathy at the moment of conducting. Such directing style reminds so much to the well reminded Arthur Fielder, who made unforgettable appearances with his Boston Pops.
Besides, Jarvi possesses an enviable sense of straightforward conviction around every single work he commands.
In this case, he overtly demonstrates once more with this fascinating album.

I remember listening to this when it was on cassette tape many years ago. My dad would play it over and over again in the car whenever we would go on long road trips. So I'm glad that it's available for an MP3 download now; I've been listening to it in my iPod in the car, reliving old memories.
This album is perfect for fans of American/Western music. It has classic Western TV themes, such as "Bonanza," "Rawhide," and "Wagon Train". Whoever picked the William Tell Overture as the theme for the Lone Ranger was a genius, and it's inclusion is apposite for this CD. Then, there are rousing movie themes, such as "Big Country," "How the West Was One," and my personal favorite of the movie themes here, "Silverado." Further, the late, great vocalist ... Read More:

First of all, let's answer the question the Nyman fan will be asking: Is it worth getting this disc if you already have the Drowning by Numbers soundtrack? Well, these are new recordings, made in 2005 and 2006. I don't own the original soundtrack but I do have a double-disc film music "best of" from a few years ago that has 3 pieces on it, and the new performances are certainly different enough to justify getting them. Take note, however, that if you have Nyman's Greenaway Revisited disc, then the 3 Drowning pieces from there appear to also be here.
So, what is this album anyway? According to Nyman's sleeve notes, this is a deliberately delayed 250th-anniversary tribute to Mozart, and all the pieces here - in fact only one of them written for the 2006 ... Read More:
