After listening to the samples on amazon I was not holding up high hopes for Great Big Sea's latest album. It already struck me as sounding over-produced and not as organic as most of the GBS albums. Being a loyal GBS fan I bought Fortune's Favour and have been dutifully listening to it and I've noticed some important things. This album is a BIG mix of styles. There are tracks that sounds like 90s rock, some more like modern country, and some more traditional songs. There are a lot of tight harmonies, but the drum set and the grab bag of auxiliary instruments is distracting. Every time I listened to this album I remember seeing Le Vent du Nord live.

I discovered them at the Sebastopol Celtic Festival. The positive energy level in the room was amazing! I just wish I could have been there the day before when they (along with Baka Beyond) gave a concert for 500 local elementary school kids. Reports are that the kids went totally nuts: jumping up and down, twirling around, and dancing in the aisles.

If you are old enough to remember The Kingston Trio the Kings are an Irish version with all the great harmony and humor. If you like this kind of music, the Kings are a must. Amazon was great with their instant delivery.

Just Look Them Straight in the Eye and Say...Pogue Mahone

I'm generally not one to gush on music except in rare cases like this when high expectations are met with an even grander result. This box is full of some of the best Pogues you will ever hear. How it wasn't released earlier on is beyond me, but it's here now and you must own it if you like the Pogues.

The remastering on many of the cuts is spectacular. You can tell this music isn't just enjoyed, it's loved.

Phil Chevron's notes are well worth the read and give many insights into the madness that is The Pogues.

This box set is well priced and worth twice as much.

Everyone should see this at least once, if only to gain a bit of understanding about the Irish people and spirit.
It's a fun outing and views of the audience add to the effect.
Irish music done in the traditional way inspires singing along and even dancing.
Well worth the price and time to enjoy.

If you like bands like The Pogues, Dubliners etc. you will like this as well. Nothing really surprising or new, just good Irish folklore in "pub rock" or even punk style. Big load of energy and sentiments. Listening this, all you want to do is go to good Irish pub, collect couple pints of Guinness and probably switch to Irish whiskey later...

Donovan Leitch was an icon, of sorts, of the sixties. He was a part of the hippie/folk music movement that began back then. Bob Dylan was one of the big movers & shakers of this movement & many, including Donovan, took up this banner. Donovan was definitely at the front of this movement for a period of time & had some major hits, some of them classic & timeless. This is supposedly the original version with bonus tracks added. Well, it is & it isn't; at least two of the tracks that were on the original vinyl version, as many others have stated, aren't the versions that was on that vinyl record.
