This Cd made me a Cello fan. It is relaxing "a lo Glass", (as usual). Before, I considered the violoncello an inferior
entity within the violin family, but now I have great respect for both, the instrument and Phillip. To me: definitely a 5 star.

P.S. I'm not a professional music analyst just in case I may have disappointed any one for not getting into the technical analysis of the CD.

Play this when you are ready to stop and listen. Don't even think. If you are able to listen and lose thought, you'll enjoy this music.

I've long been a fan of Phillip Glass and his repetitive musical style, and find this CD to be a good example for people who don't know his music. I believe that if you like this, you'll like his other stuff. If not, then you probably won't. I'm a big fan and have this music in my play list and find it a nice change from some of the other rock, jazz, folk, and world music i enjoy.

Philip Glass: Waiting for the Barbarians

CD-Charts > Music > Glass- Philip
from: Orange Mountain Music

Release Date June 03, 2008
Philip Glass and librettist Christopher Hampton have adapted J. M. Coetzee's parable about power and inhumanity in an opera that staggers in both dramatic power and beauty. The story is set in a town on the fringes of a nameless Empire that is in the process of expanding over the lands of wandering peoples called The Barbarians. As settlers encroach on grazing lands, the Barbarians are led to raid a few cattle, the same solution that Native Americans were forced into as European settlers forged westward. The Empire's response is very contemporary, however, fabricating a threat and confirming it through "confessions" made under torture. As the army takes over and terrorizes the town, its inhabitants are fanned into a frenzy of fear that allows them to accept ... Read More:

if you're looking for music that sounds like a soundtrack for a movie you'll forget in 5 minutes, buy this disc. this music is really bad. at one point a violin line sounds like a vivaldi rip off, and you know what stravinsky said about vivaldi: "vivaldi was a very boring man who wrote the same concerto over and over." in a nutshell, glass's compositions sound like a second year piano student playing appegiated triads over and over and over and over............

CD-Charts Music : Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass

Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass

CD-Charts > Music > Glass- Philip
from: Nonesuch

Release Date February 07, 1995
I am befuddled by the negative reviews of this recording, just as I am befuddled by those who dismiss Glass, Reich and their peers as "Minimalists" as if their development had ended where it started. Both Reich and Glass are now mature and accomplished composers who have transformed the radical ideas of their youth into a rich and unique compositional language.

On this recording, Kronos show us just how involving and nuanced Glass's "repetitive" language can be. The Quartet #5 in particular is a masterpiece. Perhaps my favorite Glass composition. It is chock full of wonderful melodic and rhythmic ideas. Yes, the rhythmic and harmonic backdrop consists of relentless diatonic arpeggios, but the continual harmonic and dynamic modulations pull the listener ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Glass: Music in Twelve Parts

Glass: Music in Twelve Parts

CD-Charts > Music > Glass- Philip
from: Orange Mountain Music

Release Date July 21, 2008
This is the original version of Philip Glass's magnum opus (well, one of many magnum opuses) Music in Twelve Parts. He has since re-recorded it, and this old version is out of print. I personally prefer this version. While it may not be as technically proficient as the latter version, it's rawer (as raw as Glass can be) and more human than the latter version. It's an epic work, one piece in twelve parts, with every part running on average 15 minutes, usually longer. It is not a slight undertaking to listen to it. It's a committment, like watching a Tarkovsky film, watching Bela Tarr's Satantango, watching Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz, reading Tolstoy's War and Peace or watching a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. All of Glass's work is like that, but his early ... Read More:

I bought this CD on a whim when I bought David Byrne's Knee Plays. However, who could resist a Glass of Rumi? I would love to see the Robert Wilson it goes with, but I dearly love the music and the words.

Glass: Book of Longing

CD-Charts > Music > Glass- Philip
from: Orange Mountain Music

Release Date December 11, 2007
This is yet another release by Glass that is an utter loss. Ever since Philip Glass got popular, his music has become banal and redundant. He keeps recycling the same sounds from other recordings, and does not do anything different from the past ten years. This recording just leaves the listener longing for the older Glass recordings that were what originally stood out from other stuff. Glass should just retire if all he can do is rehash and recycle previous material.
