I've been listening to this album a lot lately and it's settling in -- in a really good way. It's nowhere near the ambition or energy of Ghost is Born, but it feels like a natural progression, and it's just a really good album. And I still call Wilco America's greatest living rock band.
Release Date April 23, 2002
I've listened to this record hundreds of times, and still manage to find new snorks and squonks. I love the fact that WB initially didn't find it "commercial" enough, but when all was said and done, they ended up buying it twice! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buy this, and listen to it over and over again.
Release Date June 23, 1998
I think everything has been said already in the previous reviews so there's not much - or rather nothing - I can add.
All I wanted to say is that this is a very special record for me. I listen to a lot of music and own several hundred CDs but this one is really outstanding. I think that this record is really emotional but in a pleasent kind of way. A lot of songs on the album bring tears to my eyes everytime I hear them. The whole project was a great idea and one can feel that the participators put all their heart and love into it.
In short: Mermaid Avenue is one of the records that makes live worth living for me.
I'm a fan of Wilco but I love this one better than any of their studio-albums.
Release Date March 09, 1999
Rarely do you own an album where you like every track. Maybe those days are gone. But this album certainly fits that description for me. This is an amazing album.
Release Date March 28, 1995
its really good, quite a bit different than their later stuff, but still really good. if you dig alt country, there is no reason to not have this album

I really liked Wilco's song "Jesus, etc." and I thought I'd give an album a try. A Ghost is Born was the first album available for check out at my local library. I disliked the album almost immediately. The most noticeable disappointment is the poor mixing. The opening lyrics are nearly inaudible unless you turn up your stereo. This is unfortunate, because when the guitar and drums come in, you'll get blasted.
The jam session quality of most of the songs is also frustrating. Almost every song sports a monotonous or irritating simplistic rhythm over which a guitar is tortured into pseudo-experimentation. Other songs belabor an otherwise interesting tune, either putting it to sleep with boring and sometimes out-of-tune vocals or destroying it with ... Read More:

I am an extreme latecomer to Wilco's music; up until a couple of years ago I'd never heard of them. I became interested in so-called "numbers stations", radio stations that broadcast nothing but mysterious voices reciting strings of numbers, and somebody at work told me that a band called Wilco had used numbers stations on one of their recordings, which is how I came to listen to Wilco's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'. It quickly became one of my favourite CDs, and it wasn't long before I discovered this sprawling gem of an album.
'Kicking Television' has nearly everything I want from a live album; the songs are in many cases fresher, livelier and more eventful than the original versions, the playing is great, and the mood is palpably upbeat. I could wish that ... Read More:

It's interesting to read the reviews by the detractors of this album. I find them very biased and short-sighted and would encourage anyone who doesn't know either Mermaid album to listen to cuts from both in random order to dispel the idea of this being a "patchy" "sequel" to the first. In my view, it is a sequel only by default, having come second. I listened to and absorbed this entire album before Mermaid I and I could easily have said the opposite, that the first is not as good, sloppy and patchy without ghaving given it a fair shake. Let's pause for a moment to consider the thought, time and work that went into the project as well as where these artists were in their careers at the time and what they've accomplished since. I found the first volume difficult to enjoy as ... Read More:
