Despite a lengthy career, both with Deep Purple and his own band Whitesnake, David Coverdale's big break came in the late 80's when he reinvented Whitesnake's sound for the hair metal era. The resulting albums - 1987's self-titled Whitesnake and 1989's Slip of the Tongue - are the band's best known works (thanks in no small part to some very memorable videos), and are collected in this great 2-disc set from French reissue label Axe Killer.

Stalkers in Tokyo Live

Among the unplugged rock performances i have experienced lifetime, this is the most outstanding one. Speechless about Mr.Coverdale's vocal performance. I believe, no one on the earth could add more to these songs performing them. But feel I must also note that Mr.Vanderberg's existance adds what ever needed to flourish.

This is a unique example to show nothing is needed more to rock then a man singing accompanied by a guitar.

Highly reccomended not only for Whitesnake fans but also anyone who would like to listen music at the purest soulfull state.

I think Amazon needs to pay me some dividends!! When this first came out Amazon was listing this for a price of between $35 and $45. I had to go elsewhere to get it for the price it was really worth. Now after paying $25 elsewhere, Amazon lists it for less than $15. What a rip off!!

Slide It In

I bought the U.S. version of this first, so I'm obviously more partial to that one. This U.K. version was the first one to be recorded and has Micky Moody instead of guitarist John Sykes, and some bassist by the name of Colin instead of original Whitesnake member Neil Murray. The songs are in a completely different order, starting out with the atmospheric hard rocker " Gambler " instead of the title track, which actually comes next.

The difference in the mixes are immediately noticeable...the U.S. version has the guitars and drums louder in the mix, while Jon Lord's keyboards and Colin's bass are more prominent on the U.K. version. Trouble

The first WS CD I heard was Lovehunter, probably around 1980 or thereabouts, and encouraged me to find more by the band. In my opinion, everything prior to the 1987 CD i.e. before Coverdale parted company with the 3 M's, demonstrates WS at their best and the Trouble album is probably my favourite. The title track is superb and they also do a really funky version of 'Day-Tripper' which for me is streets ahead of The Beatles own version. My recommendation is, if you've only heard the post- Marsden, Moody, Murray version of WS, then you really need to check this album out, not so much for the 'metal' guitars (because you won't find any!), but for the sheer quality of the song writing and the range of styles which the band showed it could do well.
