Video Games Live, Vol. 1

I went to the video games live concert back in the winter and was blown away and immediately began salivating for the album to purchase. As soon as it was available, it was in the mail bound for my address. While it does explore some of the more obscure titles out there (Myst, Civilization, Tron [Tron? What the heck?]), some of the more obvious tracks are omitted. Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Metal Gear Solid: these were all highlights of the show and what people came to hear!
Its an enjoyable album and still one of my favorites, but I'm eager for volume two to come out and (hopefully) enjoy those classics I crave.
Oh, Halo and Castlevania are awesome renditions, by the way.

Switched-On Bach II

Switched-On Bach II (along with The Well-Tempered Synthesizer) really shows what the analogue Moog gear could do in the hands of people who knew what they were doing. The performances hold up and the arrangements make the most of the material. This is Bach, after all, so that's a pretty tall order. Wendy and Rachel's experience on the earlier albums shows.

After nearly 40 years Switched-On Bach sounds, frankly, clunky in places (though it was revolutionary at the time). SOB-II still sounds fresh.

I just happened upon this set of reviews on Amazon (although I had reviewed the original SOB separately years ago), and was delighted at the multitude of very favorable reviews by others. But then came the weeds amongst the fruit, namely those few reviews by people who just did not 'get it'. The Amazon 'editorial reviewer' should get an award for the most ignorant and condescending review ever given a classical album...."wacky and goofy" indeed...what a fool. Then there was a review that dismissed the entire set of recordings because the music was 'mechanical'. My God, Carlos' performances are anything BUT mechanical...the main reasons that Wendy's performances outshine the competition are that she skillfully orchestrated the original music to sound best given ... Tron

Tron's music by Wendy Carlos is surely one of the most innovative soundtracks I've ever heard (even though it's been 20+ years since its release). This is a mix of electronic music with orchestral arrangements, a rare combination that works great because of the film's theme, the computer world (which in several aspects resembles the real world). It's not often that you can listen to synthesizers along with a pipe organ, but this seemingly strange combination works fine in giving the film a very special mood, which I always thought was more appropiate for adults (the film is a Disney production, but the script is a bit dark and the story line deals with not-so-childish concerns - which I think it's great, but not specially appealing for children). The Incredible Film Music Box
