what a great compilation of pre-war old-timey music, including an informative booklet withlots of pictures. You will not find any of these recordings anywhere else so snatch this one up while it is still available. I don't want to get into the particulars of any one artist or song, 'cause they're all great and listened together in context makes it all that much greater.

After seeing " DESPERATE MAN BLUES " on TV; I found out about this CD & knew that I had to own it. Even though ( as I indicated in a prior review ) I am NOT a 78 rpm Collector; I do know that this CD really is a TREASURE TROVE of some extremely special records that are definitely worth listening to. Kudos to JOE BUSSARD for being the superb Collector that he so obviously is & for putting this incredible Collection together !!!......My only question is ( as other reviewers have also inquired )......JOE; HAVING SOME AWARENESS OF THE EXTENT OF YOUR COLLECTION.....WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FOLLOW UP WITH ANOTHER CD LIKE THIS ?????

Uncle Dave was the last of his generation, an entertainer who spand was from the 1870s until the 1950s, and one of the first big stars of the Grand Ole Oprey. Well, it wouldn't matter if these records had been made about a 18 year old guy from Westwood in LA. Uncle Dave is great.
He's a good banjo picker--although his showmanship, sympathy for his age, braggadocio, and now and then having his accompanyiest the Great Sam McGhee pick in his place in behind the curtain banjo competitions more than his playing is more responsible for his reputation as a great banjo playor or the best.
However, what he really is is a great entertainer. These records are fun. Dave is whooping it up, he's giving you emotion, mostly happy motiion. ... Read More:

The liner notes on this CD state that Hesperus chose to mix the styles of early and traditional music "for no good reason at all." The result is a mix of medieval-Renaissance music with traditional American music that is truly delightful. The three members of Hesperus play a diverse group of traditional and modern instruments and their choice of instruments on particular songs is as interesting as the choice of the songs that they blended together. The music is crisp and clear showing that the members know their music and their instruments. Dr. Tina Chancey is an expert on early music, while Scott Reiss is a graduate student studying ethnomusicology. All three members are experienced recording artists. The only (minor) drawback to this ... Read More:

Possibly one of the finest sets out. If you want to really understand the depth of early country music, then you must have this set. Macon had all the styles and showmanship that influenced everyone from Charlie Poole to Bill Monroe. Every single song that was ever issued by Macon is contained on this set and the book is an incredible read. Most recommended!
