There are two glaringly obvious affectations to blame for the artistic failure of U2's 'the Joshua Tree'. One is the record company, who MUST for the sake of their shareholders, send young provincial bands to the colonies, and the huge rewards from the eager masses there. The other is the Clash.
'London Calling' sent U2, and any number of other groups from the UK and beyond, scuttling for their cowboy boots and neckerchiefs in the mistaken belief that they-could-take-on-American-influences-and-still-be-interesting....not so.
If you give young people in their 20's, lots of cash and put them on a plane to the heart of consumerism, they're gonna imbibe...and how. Within weeks they're adopting that ridiculous gait all rock groups must adopt ... Read More:

Achtung Baby

Out of my whole U2 collection, I'd have to say this is my favorite one. U2 is a band that comes out with albums that never sound the same, but you know it's them. I love this album because it was an area U2 never explored as far as modern rock. Just like Bono said on the "Achtung Baby" Video, it's the most serious album with the least sounding title.
I love the whole allum, but "One", "The Fly", and "Ultra Violet" are my favorite tracks. Just like any other album they came out with, all 4 band members shine through with they're playing skills. I'm so glad the always do "One" when in concert. This is A MUST album to get for any U2 fan. I love this album so much, I can never get sick of it!

All That You Can't Leave Behind

This is the first U2 album I ever listened to, and I would have to say that it is still my favorite. I've heard a lot of people whine about how "it's not a rock album." Well, I don't think it's supposed to be a "rock" album in the way most people think; in other words, it's not Achtung Baby. I've always thought of All That You Can't Leave Behind as a chilled-out album. To me, it's a soothing, thought-provoking album with beautiful songwriting that's not meant to be a head-bangin' rock CD (with "Elevation" being the exception). If you are up to speed on your U2ology, then you would know the circumstances and mindset under which the band wrote this album and might appreciate it more (if you don't already). Joshua Tree (Remastered / Expanded) (Super Deluxe Edition) (2CD/DVD)

While I've enjoyed every U2 album (there's even redemption in at least half of their "Pop" album from the 1990s), The Joshua Tree is what got me into the band originally and is what I consider their first masterpiece. Achtung, Baby and then How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb eventually followed as triumphs, but this box set was a delightful gift to have received. Sure, I owned the Joshua Tree already, but after 20 years it's a bit worn out and the remastered versions are crisp and clear. The packaging is nice, although I don't need such a thick box just to hold a booklet and a couple of CDs/DVDs.

The book that is included makes for a great companion to the CD and the DVD of the Joshua Tree Tour show from Paris is actually very high quality, along the same lines of other U2 ... Read More:

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

I got started on The Joshua Tree and Achtung, Baby. The genre of Atomic Bomb is somewhat different from those classics, but it's still on of my favorites. U2 has endured the test of time.

Boy

Of all the U2 Deluxe Editions that are being released, this one is the most valuable. Not only Boy is a great debut album but the bonus material is really worth. Early singles 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, A Day Without Me, U2 3 and Another Day are important pieces of history that show the band's growth in the early days. The songs from U2 3 (from 1979 - two years earlier), in particular, are a must; not that they are that good but because the band sounds very young and different with a bit of glam-rock edge.
So, as a Deluxe Edition, this is as good as it gets. A five-star.
