An interesting proposition this. Two different composers were at work here. Tracks one through to nine were composed by Trevor Jones. Tracks ten through to fifteen were by Randy Edelman. Quite why this arrangement was adopted I don't know but the feel of the album, which is so important with a soundtrack, is intact. Which speaks volumes for collaborative album construction.
The music here has to, and succeeds in, encompassing a number of moods. Much of the music needs to be stirring and there are no better examples around of stirring music than track three, The Kiss, or tracks five and six, Fort Battle and Promontory respectively. Other parts of the film score required a mood of tense expectation such as track ten, The courier. ... Read More:

As one reviewer put it, there was, indeed, a fuller version of this soundtrack out some time ago and yes, it is something of a listening experience however the album recordings allow you too enjoy the complete Pod peoples dance party music and the Gelfling Love theme and the Dark Crystal anthem in there entirety, a sound which evokes times spent walking across Dartmoor or the Lake District, wonderful music, truly inspiring work and this album alone is worthy to be hailed highly for these very recordings. The extended 2 disc version was insightful but not a nessarcary addition as it is the only end tracks (27) Jen Discovers Crystal Chamber and track (28) Gelfling Frightens The Skeksis, The Crystal Made Whole, Mystics and Skeksis, Fuse, Finale, End Credits ... If you like baroque music. If you like (or love) Bach, then seek no further! Trevor Pinnock is your man! It's difficult to believe, I know, but every single recording the man has made (at least, as far as I can see) is superb or excellent or at least very good. So, if these classics are what you're after, this classic recording of Bach's Orchestral Suites and Brandenburgs is the one to have. Excellent sound, packaging, notes, photos. Get it!

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

... but this one wasn't as good as the first one. By "first" I mean that soundtrack that has Daniel Day-Lewis on the cover. Something about that one was just magical. Don't get me wrong, this is a great soundtrack but the first one had... "it". To the trained ear you can tell the difference in a number of the tracks.
I guess I'll have to buy the original CD and burn it.

This CD is not what it claims to be. It's the Scottish National Orchestra re-doing themes from several movies, and the themes have definitely lost their flavor -- not to mention their tempo. I'm very disappointed. When I want the soundtrack to something, I want the actual soundtrack!
These are not bad renditions if you hadn't seen the movies -- but it's almost as bad as hearing a midi of some song you like: it's just what's on the page, not the incredible flavor of the version in the movie.
Haven't been this disappointed with an album since my penny-pinching little brother bought me "101 Strings Play Simon & Garfunkel". ;)

This collection contains just about every major well known Baroque piece ever used for a wedding, graduation or ultimate Baroque 'starter kit'.Vocalists such as the Welsh Baritone Bryn Terfel, the late great Pavarotti, the world's foremost oboist of the '70 and '80is Heinz Holliger and Orchestras such as Saint Martin-in-the-Fields and I Musici are assembled with defining renditions of these great favorites. There are two tracks of particular interest that is of great delight:the little recorded "Le Coucou" by Jean Daquin as performed by harpsichord virtuoso Trevor Pinnock.Pinnock wisely has chosen a "stopped" sound for his performance instead of full sound and it is a delight to the ears;another unusual delight was to hear the choral "Zadok the Priest" from Handel's ...
