Greetings from Timbuk 3

I picked this up in a cassette format from a bargain bin in the mid 80's after the popularity of the single The Futures So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades wore off a bit. I always liked that song, kind of as a novelty item, but also since it kind of said what I felt about the future in a tongue in cheek sort of way. After getting the album and listening to it, I found (as I had many times before with lots of groups/albums) that the rest of the material was every bit as good, if not better, than the song I more or less bought it for! There are some other songs on this album that follow the concept of being somewhat humourous while still delivering a good message (like Hairstyles and Attitudes, Shame on You), but yet others are no hold barred serious ... New Wave Christmas - Just Can't Get Enough

I really do love this CD but I do agree with the other reviewers who said that some of the artists on this CD are NOT New Wave groups. Specifically They Might Be Giants, The Buzz Of Delight, Chris Stamey Group and Mono Puff.
If these artists were replaced with the following:

Pet Shop Boys - It Doesn't Snow Often On Christmas
Erasure - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Depeche Mode - Christmas Island
Max Headroom - Merry Christmas, Santa Claus (You're A Lovely Guy)

I, Pat, would be a great deal happier. Anyhoo, that's all I have to say for now. I might be back to edit this review later; but until then... Have a Happy Christmas and a... Merry New Year... is that right?

Eden Alley

If you like your rock sparse, bluesy, smart, and rough around the endges, you can't go wrong with Timbuk 3, and this is one of their best. A lot of variation here, from the smash-bang funkiness of Reverend Jack to the freakishly catchy Sample the Dog and the dreamy darkness of Easy. In fact, the one drawback to this album is that it's hard to sustain a mood when listening to it, but the tunes are great, and some (like Jack and Sample) are absolutely indispensible.

Big Shot in the Dark

The songwriting is wonderful. I came across a promo copy and neglected it for years; when I finally gave it some attention, I was amazed. I've since lost that copy, so I've just bought another. It seems to be out of print. It's a shame that no one seemed to notice this great album.

Hundred Lovers

If you like eclectic thoughtful writing, dynamic recording and production, and something out of the Rock mainstream (a niche we used to call "Progressive Rock" when I worked at Seattle's KEZX radio in the early '90's) ...you will probably treasure this offering from the dynamic duo of Pat and Barbara K MacDonald.
In the case of Timbuk 3, the commercial success of their hit, "The Future's So Bright" was largely a curse, because they are so much more than that one song, yet- a lot of people think of that tune as having been a defining statement about them, which probably limited their exposure to a larger audience. seriously, one of the great husband and wife teams. timbuk 3's pat & barbara k. mcdonald have been the most accomplished intelligent musical teams imaginable. their lyrics are insightful and strangely unboring for irony even after a few thousand listens. Their song structure is inventive and sturdy and their musicianship is suberb. buy this album and every timuk 3 offering you can find.
