The Real Ramona

by: Throwing Muses

Release Date March 12, 1991
This is the best Throwing Muses cd. Hersh and Donelly are both in top form. This is the one that made me a fan of the Muses. It's creepy and exciting.

Throwing Muses

from: 4ad / Ada

Release Date March 04, 2003
I don't have much to add to all the reviews that other people have written except to say that this is one of my all-time favorite CDs, one that gets better on repeated listenings. I have probably listened to this CD more than any other over the past couple of years. Kristin Hersh is an absolutely amazing singer, song writer, and guitar player. This album really does deserve five stars; I'd give it more if I could.

It's pretty usual for a band to get and better, particularly one that has been around for so long, but that is exactly the case with Throwing Muses. It's sad that this may be the last studio album from the Muses (although the band still plays live and Kristin has of course formed 50 Foot Wave with Muses bassist Bernard Georges, and Muses ... CD-Charts Music : Red Heaven

Red Heaven

by: Throwing Muses

Release Date August 11, 1992
Power rock with no frills, alternating with frequent acoustic interludes, spooky vocals and sur-rural lyrics not unlike prime Dylan - Hersch was exploring similar musical sources. Red Heaven grabbed my attention on its release because it truly seemed to be inspired by muses.

Hersch's lyrics have a timeless feeling of hard luck survivors in small remote towns separated by long stretches of highway - without ever making any such obvious references. The ensemble and production are bony and flexible in both electric and acoustic modes, casually shifting tempos and melodies (perhaps why it sounds unstructured to some), again making Red Heaven sound somewhat outside of its time and enduring as a musical document.

Dio's about as aggressive as anything ... Read More:

In a Doghouse

by: Throwing Muses

Release Date September 15, 1998
This rules. Throwing Muses back when they were truly unique and hungry. The later stuff is good (especially The Real Ramona), but to be honest, I think Kristin watered the sound of the band down a bit.

This early material is raw and sometimes vicious, yet insanely catchy. Get it.

Limbo

by: Throwing Muses

Release Date August 13, 1996
Limbo sounds more like falling in love feels than any album I have ever heard. By turns soothing, exhilarating, and thought-provoking, it is my favorite Muses album of all time. The complex rhythm structures and Hersh's angular vocal delivery are still there, but it's the band's balletic dynamic sense on this album that leaves me reeling every time.

New Wave Christmas - Just Can't Get Enough

by: Wall of Voodoo, David Bowie, Throwing Muses, The Pretenders, The Pogues, Squeeze, Timbuk 3, XTC

Release Date October 15, 1996
I really do love this CD but I do agree with the other reviewers who said that some of the artists on this CD are NOT New Wave groups. Specifically They Might Be Giants, The Buzz Of Delight, Chris Stamey Group and Mono Puff.
If these artists were replaced with the following:

Pet Shop Boys - It Doesn't Snow Often On Christmas
Erasure - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Depeche Mode - Christmas Island
Max Headroom - Merry Christmas, Santa Claus (You're A Lovely Guy)

I, Pat, would be a great deal happier. Anyhoo, that's all I have to say for now. I might be back to edit this review later; but until then... Have a Happy Christmas and a... Merry New Year... is that right?

House Tornado/The Fat Skier

by: Throwing Muses

Release Date April 07, 1993
It's always great when you can find "new" material from a band that doesn't exist anymore. Even though I already have "House Tornado," I didn't hesitate to buy this CD for "The Fat Skier" ep. The songs are excellent and the production is very good too (wasn't sure what to expect from an ep). An earlier reviewer had commented that "Soul Soldier" wasn't included, which is true, but it can be found on "In a Doghouse."
