An excellent cd sung in english with a libretto to guide you. This two cd set is very much worth owning and is conducted by the composer. It is not like the usual mass in that it employs two orchestras, singers, dancers and two choruses.

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...

Masters of the Trumpet

I purchased this recording as a reference recording for my trumpet studio. As I started to listen to it, I realized that it contains some of the absolute greatest classical trumpet recordings there are. Rafael Mendez is mind-blowing, Bud Herseth's rendition of the Haydn Concerto is stunningly flawless and Abblasen is a great way to open this 2-CD set. It contains a sample of almost all the great symphonic trumpeters of the last 50 years. A "must have" doesn't even begin to justify how great this set is ... and at Amazon's price, don't even hesitate. Just click BUY and enjoy. This is a very good movie especially if you like musicals. Although my husband is not a huge fan of muscials and he thought it was very good. Great acting, great music and the story line is good. Liked it so much I ordered the cd for the music!

John Adams - The Death of Klinghoffer / Nagano, The Orchestra of the Opera de Lyon

Like El Nino, The Death of Klinghoffer is far closer to a dramatic oratorio than to an opera. Kent Nagano conducts Lyon Opera forces with the original singers who directly inspired the composer. The story is based on the age-old conflict between Palestinians and Jews. The closing scene brings the bitter concluding lament of Klinghoffer's wife, Marilyn. The mezzo Sheila Nadler rises to the challenge superbly, and the baritone Sanford Sylvan is comparably sensitive as Kinghoffer himself, well matched by James Maddalena as the Captain, an Evangelist-like commentator, and by Thomas Hammons and Janice Felty in multiple roles. The recorded sound is excellent, but the booklet reproduces an unrevised version of the libretto.

I always enjoy Parkening while driving. The songs are all familiar and relaxing, with a few that I have to replay a time or two before I can go on to the next song. Interesting harpsichord guitar combination on one song.

This is an amazing piece of work. I attended its performance in Ann Arbor, when this recording was made. Unfortunately, the thrill of the performance, with its cast of thousands, does not quite come through in the recorded version. Nonetheless, its a remarkable piece of work.
