The Vogues - Greatest Hits

The Vogues are a favorite of mine. "You Are My Special Angel" makes my
5 minute commute to work a good way to start the day [No one can hear me
singing in the car] and "Five O'clock World" is a good song to drive home with. I wish the producer had limited the CD to 8-10 of their very best
songs because there's too much not so good stuff on here. Too much pushing
the select button while driving! But it's still a great CD.

These ladies are so much fun to listen to! "You're Never Gonna Get It" brings me back to my childhood. The rhythms, the inserted rap (before profanity and the "N" word were requirements), the harmonies, the attitude. It makes you happy! Not their best album, but an excellent listen!

This album title got a double meaning, it stands for their third album but also the group getting reduced to a trio after the departure of Dawn Robinson. After the magnificient Funky Divas that featured the unmistakable hit singles "Free Your Mind" and "My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)" the band took a 5 year hiatus and alot of things happened in the music industry during that time, their brilliant fusion between R&b, Dance, Hip Hop and Rock was no longer that trendy and 5 years is long enough for any group to lose it's popularity, but the three remaining members do the best of the situation and together with trademark producers Foster/mcElroy they're still able to satisfy most listeners. Masterpiece Theatre

En Vogue set the standard for themselves with the 1992's "Funky Divas." The record was a mixture of various musical styles, executed with a demure & mature sense of soulfulness. One wonders if they can ever really match its success and innovation?

2000's "Masterpiece Theatre" is a yes & no to that question. This record finds the three ladies of En Vogue pushing on without Dawn Robinson, their former pseudo-leader. But Terry, Maxine, & Cindy seemed to have fused well as a three-piece, making their own unique charisma minus Robinson. With longtime producers Foster & McElroy at the production helms, "Masterpiece Theatre" is another assured, mature, sensual, and stylish R&B record.

Only half of the original vocal quartet converted into a a trio with a new vocalist,yet for whatever reason this release failed to capture that commercial audience(,ofcourse this would'nt be the first time a good record failed to attract immediate attention) The songwriting on this album reflects a mature and poetic quality seldon heard in todays music factory conditions. The Ladies as usual are vocally in top/superior form,the addition of a male background vocalist on several of the tracks showcase their ability to share the mike for the sake of generating good music. oddly enough I found this disc in a pile at the local Tower Records in Richmond,Va when they were going out of business. They were being sold for a buck! I immediately bought a few and passed them out as Christmas gifts..everyone ... Read More:

When I think of girl groups today like Danity Cane, Destiny's Child, and a lot of the wannabe others, they seem to miss out in having the onetrue thing tht really does mattr, the harmonies in each voice. For classic girl groups like The Supremes, and The pointer Sisters, they've thrived and made a unoque appeal that has lasted for so many decades, and broke several walls down. That aso could be said for En Vogue too. When they brok out in the 90's, they brought out a unique sens of soul, funk, hip hop, and R&B. Although they've tried to prove they still have the right stuff, in the late 90's after dawn Robinson exited the group, they haven't duplicated their success. Now, another hits record is out, and the question is, are you going to actualy hold on to it?
