Sometime around 1962, at a juncture in American Rock and Roll and before the invading Brits, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were touring small blues clubs in the South as a rhythm and blues vocal duo when suddenly one of the locals shouted out during the course of the performance, "that's righteous, man". That patron inadvertently named what would become, I believe, the foremost blue eyed soul performers in rock and roll history. They weren't related at all, but Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield made a great combination with their contrasting voices. This compilation offers a comprehensive study of their career from 1963 to 1974 including their classic recordings with Phil Spector as producer. While their career may seem quite long, the songs they are remembered for all came from a very short part of that period.

The Righteous Brothers made their earliest recordings for Moonglow. The best of those early efforts occupy the first fifteen tracks of the first CD here. This was an impulse purchase, and like other reviewers I've been regretting my haste. Not only would my fellow reviewers have saved me the eight bucks I spent on this, I have an excellent source that would have warned me as well. I have a copy of Pat Downey's THE GOLDEN AGE OF TOP 40 MUSIC ON COMPACT DISC. It's already failry dated (it was published in 1992), but here's what it has to say about UNCHAINED MELODY (Curb 77381):

"Unchained Melody": This is a rerecoding.

"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'": This is the original. [At least the book SAYS it is, but it obviously is not!]

"(You're My) Soul and Inspiration": It does not say it is a rerecording, but it notes that it is 15 seconds longer than either the original ... Read More:

i was very happy with the music great sound like the original verve released about 10 years ago then we have ihe rhino anthology great sound univeral masters so so retrospective poor sound why do we have to import a disc to get great sound?

You've Lost That Lovin Feelin'

Hi, You all remeber the movie Top Gun. Well my favorite song in that movie was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" For some reason that song isn't on the movie soundtrack, so I did my research and bought this CD. It was well worht it. All the songs are bery enjoyable, and worth my 13 bucks.
