If you like Otis Redding, you should buy this newly remastered album. If you already have it, the stereo mastering work they did on this makes it worth the purchase alone, but you will also find several live cuts, unreleased b-sides and other gems that make this worth a purchase.

It is hard to believe that Otis recorded this entire album in 24 hours, it is even harder to fathom that he was just 26 when he did so. So much soul in such a young man.

The Dock of the Bay

"The Dock of the Bay" sadly became Otis Redding's last album, and it's a bit of a haphazard collection as well, gathering various singles and B-sides and including tracks recorded as far back as 1965.

Perhaps surprisingly, it's also one of his best albums. The famous title track from 1968 sticks out stylistically; there is really nothing here quite like it.
The rest of the album is more traditional soul, spanning emotional ballads like "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" and the gospel-like "The Glory Of Love", swaggering soul stompers like "I'm Coming Home To See About You" and "Let Me Come On Home", and dance-friendly R&B like "The Huckle-Buck" and "Tramp", the classic duet with Carla Thomas.

All, this box set is worth every penny and then some. The included booklet highlighting Otis' career is not only a fantastic recapture, but features articles and passages by some of the greats themselves (I don't want to spoil it!). Disc four is worth buying the set itself--recordings of his songs from live shows throughout his, sadly, short career. Buy it, and you won't be disappointed. I'm gonna let anyone marry me 'til he loves me like Otis can love.

Memphis has produced many great musicians. Sam Phillips' Sun Studio, launched in February 1952, boasted Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. Beale Street started BB King's career. And then there was Stax/Volt, home to Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Johnnie Taylor and Rufus Thomas. These Stax acts, ably backed by one of the greatest studio bands of all time, otherwise known as Booker T. and the MGs, have left us unmatched rhythm and blues.
