It was great to hear three songs from this album in the recent Wes Anderson movie, "Darjheeling Limited." The three songs ("This Time Tomorrow," Strangers," and "Powerman") sounded fabulous in the theatre and complemented the movie well. A couple of strange things, though. These songs were originally written as part of a concept album savaging the Music Biz. Anderson's movie had nothing to do with that subject, yet the songs neatly emphasized the movie's feel for spiritual awakening. The one song from the album that would have fit the movie best, "Still a Long Way from Home," wasn't even used in the film, though it's theme of brotherly contemplation and reconciliation would have fit the movie perfectly. What is really striking is that ... Read More:

You will become addicted to this soundtrack. It actually surpasses the movie in that respect (although the movie is great too). I'm ready to start searching the cable channels or Netflix looking for these old Satyajit Ray movies.

1968 was an awesome year for music and this is one of the finest things to come out of it, and any other year in fact. Positively exploding with creative songwriting the concept is perfectly created musically. Lyrically perceptive, musically energetic and melodic, all Ray Davies best points are shown to full effect on this album. Genius. Still massively influencial today with artists like Nick Worrall everything Ray does is pretty darn good but this could be his best. Enough said.

Ah, "Face to Face." Ah, The Kinks. Where do you even begin to find the words that attempt to do justice to the music that The Kinks produced from 1966-1971? I'm more passionate about their music from this period than I am about any other, so I've just got to try.
Anyone who's reading this probably has a love of their work, therefore a good knowledge of the music; where the great stuff began and where it ended, so we all know that this is where it truly began. Ray Davies was beginning to populate his song writing world with characters who would resurface on other albums and singles (No, not by name, but you knew who they were from the lyrical content), while others did not. He has a complex mind ("No one can penetrate me, they only see ... Read More:

The Kinks are known as the best least known pop band for a reason- they are talented, consistent with their excellent material, and capable of writing one memorable song after another. This band really sounds like they were born to write wonderful catchy pop songs, and they succeed quite well. Since the reputation of the Kinks has gone up in recent years as one of the finest pop bands of the 60's, so has the popularity of their albums. Back in the 60's, people didn't listen to these albums as much as people do today, such as this one, Arthur (or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire).

Fills the holes in the Itunes collection. All are Kinks classics that one must have to satisfy a craving for the lads. Sunny Afternoon, Dedicated follower of Fashion, Well Respected Man, Waterloo Sunset (original version-not live!) & Victoria (also original studio & not live!) A true collectors item. Great quality remastered recordings. All cuts sound great! This collection of their oldies provides the rare as well as the big hits. It is the most complete collection that I've found.

When I was in my first semester as a Freshman in college, I was alienated, lonely, going through some terrible trauma and depression. I had loved the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and the Who since I was little, and they had helped me through such times. Wandering into an record store (this was 1984!) in Boston, I rifled through albums, and saw this one. I had only known the Kinks at that point for You Really Got Me, and a few others, but the cover art and then the titles of the songs made me realize I might be holding a gem I had never discovered.
As I played the album that night, I had one of many revelatory experiences I had only experienced with the Beatles and Rolling Stones, and one of many I would have with the Kinks. This is a masterpiece. And you simply cannot ... Read More:

Take that, shuffle-play. John Mendelssohn fills all four sides of this two-LP set with informed and wonderfully inspired thematic collections of Kinks songs, one lyrical theme per side. In other hands, such an approach might have a reductive or pigeonholing effect, but here it provides a perfect, provactive glimpse into the depth and range of the Kinks' early recordings -- songs that reached beyond themselves to create lasting narratives, connections, and meaning.

I know there are many who rank Muswell Hillbillies with the best work of the Kinks that started with Face to Face in 1966 and certainly continued through Lola in 1970. This LP has always split the Kinks landscape. Many rank it with their golden period; many see it as the start of the big decline. This is a transitional album, much different from Lola, and I see it as the beginning of a more superficial and derivitive Ray Davies. Don't get me wrong. When compared to stuff like Soap Opera, Low Budget or Schoolboys In Disgrace, this looks like classic stuff. But compared to ANY of the 66-70 period (Face To Face, Something Else, VGPS, Arthur and Lola), this is pretty mediocre stuff. I admit it's grown on me, and there a few places they go on this album they never revisited, but as one reviewer put, the ... Read More:
