There is no questioning Hendrix and his influence on generations of musicians and guitar players and Are You Experienced is a definative records. From the opening riff of Purple Haze, the wonderful version of Hey Joe to the hauning Wind Cries Mary Hendrix's playing shines and still holds up after all this time.
Though there are many records released of Jimi, including some nice compilations/greatest hits, Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold as Love are must haves.

This high energy concert was given by Jimi in 1967, The Experience stole the show, Pete Townsend was so Jealous it was obvious. Jimi Hendrix pulled all the stops and he won the attention of the Rock Fans from that point to his death. No collection is complete without this CD, once you listen to the first song you will know what I am saying, Jimi burns everyone with this act, literally.

This is my favorite Hendrix live album for the same reason that Electric Ladyland is my favorite Hendrix studio album: it shows off his range better than any others. I'll grant that's not exactly a fair thing to say, because it's a compilation spanning his entire career, but as it turns out that career was quite a diverse one, so that's okay. This runs the gamut - Hendrix blues ("Catfish Blues", which served for the basis of the "Voodoo Chile" jam; "Hear My Train a Comin'", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Hey Joe", "Hound Dog", featuring a bunch of real dogs, a manic "Killin' Floor"), funk-rock ("Little Miss Lover"; the instrumental "Driving South"), ear busting acid-rock ("Foxey Lady"; a stripped-down "Burning of the Midnight Lamp"; "Purple Haze"; "Fire"; "Love or Confusion"; "Spanish ... I love this collection. The best of Jimi in a concise package with some not overly popular songs (ie manic depression.) Only gripe is that fast food commercials have ruined it for me. Everytime I listen to it I have visions of Whoppers floating in the air. Sigh...I guess that's what happens when coporatations sell your image postumately.

...at least of those that were recorded in such a brilliant audio-quality.
I know, it's not Woodstock or Monterey, but I hardly know any other live recording of the Experience, where Jimi, Mitch, and Noel are merging so perfectly into one deep, rich unit of sound. It all fits together.
As mentioned before, all the "hits" like "Foxy Lady", "Purple Haze", or "Hey Joe" that Jimi soon got tired to play, are sounding extremely vivid on this recording.
It's hard to point out some of the songs in particular, but what makes that record especially so extraordinary to me is:
the only life version of "Manic depression" (at least I've never heard any other in that quality),

I purchased Radio One when it was released back in 1990. When I opened the Jewel Case, I found the CD without a label - it was silver on both sides. I put it in my CD player, and it played fine.
At the time I considered returning the disc because it has no label, but I changed my mind, as the disc played fine. Now I wonder if this manufacturing defect makes the disc more valuable. I also wonder if this problem was unique to my disc, or if an entire batch lacked the label.
In any case, this is a great collection of songs recorded for the BBC.
