The Best of the Gap Band

by: The Gap Band

Release Date June 07, 1994
The Gap Band was a very good R&B group in the early 80's and fans won't be disappointed with this best of CD, however the music of the Gap Band copied the P-Funk sound from the 70's and after a while the music was very repetitous and ran its course.Check out the songs "Humpin'","Burn Rubber","I Don't Believe You Want to Gep Up and Dance(Oops!)" all from the school of P-Funk albums...heavy synthesizer and throw away lyrics i.e."the bigger the headache the bigger the pill"(from Parliament's "Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome") nevertheless The Gap Band will always be remembered as one of the most successful R&B groups of the 80's

by: The Gap Band

Release Date February 06, 2001
The Gap Band was a great funk/soul group of the 70's-early 80's. While this collection is nice, I personally would have liked to have seen more concentration on their 70's-early 80's songs and a little less of the late 80's-early 90's songs. Also, on those 70's-80's songs, it would have been nice to have gotten the full-length versions, on the ones that were cut short. That aside, overall this is a pretty comprehensive Gap Band compilation and I would still highly recommend it to any funk/urban/soul lover.

Gap Band IV

by: The Gap Band

Release Date May 03, 1994
There's not much that I can add to all the glowing reviews below but I have to say that back in the day, these were the dudes, for real. Alongside other real bands like Cameo, Kool & The Gang, The Brothers Johnson, Brass Construction & Skyy (just to name a couple), the Gap Band made sure we kept dancing back in the late 70s and early 80s. Lead singer Charlie Wilson, himself clearly influenced by soul legends that had preceded him, was a huge influence on many great singers that were yet to come; people like Keith Sweat, R. Kelly, Joe and all those who have followed on from them. All these guys have had huge success with Charlie's style though not one of them was as good as the original, in my opinion. That was clear to anyone who had ears when Charlie appeared ... Read More:

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of The Gap Band

by: The Gap Band

Release Date January 25, 2000
This collection is just one in a long line of half-a**ed compilations of the Gap Band ('The Best of the 80's' collection is the lone exception). The solution is to put out a 3 cd anthology for all us Gap fans. All the songs on this cd are full-length album versions, maybe not extended 12" mixes but they are not edited. The problem here is that the stingy compilers at the 20th Century Masters series refuse to put more than 11 songs on any of their products so the result is about 60 minutes of music. Know having said all that, this is the Gap Band so what you get is pretty damn good.

While I would have like to see "I'm in Love" from Gap Band I & a couple more songs from Gap Band III, this IS the best collection of the Gap Band currently out there. Rather then just focusing on the early (IE Mercury Records) recordings, we get a full look at the band's career up to 1990 (Charlie Wilson's early 1990s solo singles finishes up the collection)

The Gap Band III

by: The Gap Band

Release Date July 06, 1993
Just like the album Gap Band IV that followed it (see my review below), this 1980 release was another winner from the Wilson brothers and an iconic album of the early 80s. It was also produced by Lonnie Simmonds and gave us hits & old favourites like "Yearning For Your Love" (the title gives the sentiment away and it's a truly beautiful ballad), "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)" - with that revving motorcycle intro - and "Sweet Caroline"; another sweet ballad.

The album opener, "When I Look In Your Eyes", is a bright and bouncy number and "Are You Living" reminds me of Earth Wind & Fire at their best. The fun track "Humpin'" is reminiscent of their 1979 hit "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance (Oops, Upside Your Head)", from the album ... Read More:

THIS COLLECTION WAS GOOD BUT MISSING "SWEET CAROLINE" AND
"STAY WITH ME" TWO VERY GOOD TRACKS. BUT I BOUGHT IT ANYWAY
BECAUSE I LIKED THE OTHER BALLADS IN THIS CD. IT'S VERY HARD
TO GET ALL THE BALLADS ON THE SAME CD. TOO BAD THEY DON'T HAVE
THE ANTHOLOGY OF ALL THERE GREATEST HITS. THAT WOULD BE KOOL!!
