what can i say about this album that has not already been said.this is by far and away,without a shadow of a doubt the greatest jazz album ever made.as you can hear from the opening track,blue rondo al a turk,with it's,9/8 time,which turns into 4/4 time,to the beautiful strange meadow lark,to the instantly recognizable,take five,which is in 5/4 time.with paul desmonds,smooth and refined playing on the alto saxaphone,and with joe morello,anchoring behind the drum kit.this is definately one for the ages.outstanding cd.

Jazz Goes to College

This is the first 'modern' jazz album I ever owned. It was included in a 3 album offering from the Columbia Record Club in 1954. The other 2 albums were compilations of big band and dixieland respectively. As a 13 year old in 1954 Jazz Goes to College opened me up to the world of what was then called 'progressive' or 'modern' jazz. Brubeck's quartet made the sound of progressive jazz very accessible and started my 50+ year love affair with jazz for which I am eternally grateful. If you are new to jazz this is a great place to start. If you are a seasoned listener this a wonderful addition to any collection.

Jazz at Oberlin

Everything on the album is Brubeck/ Desmond at their greatest and most adventurous before popularity rendered them more polite, or elegant, or something admirable enough but not as exciting as this. I would single out Brubeck's solo on "The Way You Look Tonight" as one of the most daring, innovative, and relentlessly brilliant jazz performances I have ever heard on any instrument. Jazz and classical purists alike might disapprove, but it's beyond category.

Brubeck & Rushing

Although I never realized Dave Brubeck did an album with Jimmy Rushing, once I heard it, I knew I had to have it. I got a copy for my father also, who thinks the world of Brubeck and has seen him in concert from the 1950's thru today. To hear the quartet backing Rushing is really easy on the ears. If you love Brubeck, you will love this!
