Since the Cars had created a perfect album with their 1978 self-titled debut, it would be nearly impossible to top it. Instead of laboring long and hard over a follow-up like many '70s bands did after a huge commercial success, the band cranked out their sophomore effort, Candy-O, almost exactly one year later from the first LP. And while the album was not as stellar as its predecessor was, it did contain several classics, resulting in another smash album that solidified the band's standing as one of the most promising new bands of the late '70s. The first single, the Top 20 anthem "Let's Go," proves to be the best track, but plenty of other standouts can be found as well. Obviously this is the new waviest of their albums. It would've been nice to hear some more guitar, but there are still some great songs. "Drive" and the title track I cannot get enough of.

Interesting then as it is now. I love the fact that the music critics in '80 just didn't get it - it's a moody, techno-post-punk album full of angst, alienation, and self-doubt. But unlike the band Suicide, a band that Ocasek admired, the melodies always come back to a, "there must be meaning to it all", bridge. Call it existential music, dude.

Shake It Up

I remember being disapointed with the polish and the silly title track
(it's far better live)but this album I now find far more likeable
I always liked Ocasek's quirkiness and they do stretch with "dream away"
other strong numbers are opener "Since your gone" "Cruiser" "think it over" and the percusiion of "Maybe baby" definitely eighties
and not anywhere near as good as there debut or Candy O
and not as interesting as Panorama
but still as I said better then I remember

Classic Cars, pun intended. The only song I didn't care for was Heart Break City, all the other the songs are fantastic. You won't go wrong buying this one. Highly recomended.

OK I picked up this album because it was supposed to be the new Blink.
Well its more hardcore punk. Some of the songs I really, really dont like. A few were actually good, but most were just ok. If i had previewed the cd first I most likely wouldn't have bought it.

The commonly accepted storyline concerning The Cars goes like this: The band storms out of New England with a classic first album which contains many radio-friendly rock staples still on playlists today. Ever the singles band, The Cars cranked out a few more albums with great hits and lots of filler before making a big splash on MTV with Heartbeat City. Finally, the band tanked with Door To Door, one of the worst albums of the 80s.

There's a problem with this story. It's all wrong. The Cars' first album was great, but it wasn't their best (in my opinion that goes to the superb Shake It Up), they were much more than a singles band (check out "It's Not The Night," "Cool Fool" or "Cruiser" to see how good this band was apart from the hits), and Door To Door was not a total ...
