The Second Gleam (2008, Ramseur) The Avett Brothers' fourth studio EP. **1/2
The Avett Brothers are a definitive college-esque band. Hippie circles love 'em and they've got enough spunk to attact even offended ears, but on The Second Gleam, the energy is lost. That in itself is not the problem. In fact, if anything, it shows maturity. However, the material is just downright dull from start to finish. In fact, only on "The Greatest Sum" do soulful vocals actually appear, as the rest of the EP is dominated with cliche remembrances of love, family, and death. To say it is bad is one thing; awful, certainly not. But what makes it bad is its own laziness, which is a cumulative would-be effort of simple rhythms and lyrics.

ok, I'm editing this review because I feel bad giving them such a hard time. About five songs are really good. The rest was just weepy without being very interesting.
Compared to other bands it's an ok album, just not nearly as good as "Four Thieves Gone" and "Mignonette". They loose a lot of their raw edge and punk-y-ness. Sentimental gives way to sappy here. There is nothing gripping in the sound here either.
What happened to those bluegrass-y punks that screamed and yelled through their songs and made me feel like I was drinkin' in the back of a truck, driving in the country while my friends (and I) rock on guitars and banjos?
I don't even want to play this one for friends - I used to show off ... Read More:

I have this album, and it is great. I love all the stuff this band does. I have seen them in concert like 6 times so far, and will be seeing them again in Atlanta in April.
However, do NOT pay some B-S prices of $15 and above. This is a 6 song EP, and while it is good, I warn anyone from paying more then that. I saw one on here today that was $72...from the UK! These boys are from North Carolina, there is no need to buy this from England.
See them if you get the chance, and buy anything they put out, you won't be sorry. Just don't get ripped off here.

Wow. Emotionalism is such a beautifully sad album. Four Thieves Gone is raw and urgent. This one is kind of bland. No songs really stand out. Some of the lyrics are a bit trite. Sounds like a bunch of leftovers. The other albums are so great that this one just doesn't even compare. I almost feel like the boys should be apologizing to me.

Famous Flower of Manhattan is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It brings tears to my eyes (especially after a couple of glasses of wine). I just bought this cd the other day just because of that one song...This weekend I'm going to absorb the rest of the cd which I'm sure I'm going to love.

What else can I say? This is the soft side of Scott and Seth Avett stripped down to beautiful fingerpicking and harmonies. A lyrical masterpiece from 2 guys not afaid to bare their souls. A refreshing contrast to some of the junk out there today. If the Avett Brothers' music has not yet touched your life you have a void that needs filling.
