It plays on my car as we drive to Monterey and I think, along with a handful of others this is my favorite album. A handful get that kind of adulation and deep thanks. When I go into times of surgery and pain it helps. As I drive to an extremely difficult job it helps. Why I wonder? Ummm easily the musicians abilities, beyond beautifully played, it's front porch sound. I crave a sweet tea listening, sweaty day in the south, long night of dreaming awake. It grew with me, doesn't propel me back it crawls through my history teasing out rifts, pieces of truths, glimpses of hard and easy days. This music healed a few broken moments. I honestly play it to find a center.

The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East

The first time I heard this record back in 1971 when it was first released
my ears were opened. I was into the blues and was blown away with the duel lead guitars that Dickie Betts and Duane Allman played so well.
When I look back and evaluate who the great guitar players in Rock history are I have to include Duanne Allman among the very best.
It is as Eric Clapton once said "We were coming at the same thing from a different direction, I was bending strings and Duanne was playing slide.
Duanne Allman to this day is still possibly the best slide player I have ever heard. Ironically Derek Trucks is probably the best I have heard recently, ironically both from the Allman Brothers.

Brothers and Sisters

I bought this album a couple of years ago, and I believe it is the greatest Southern Rock album out there. Lots of jamming from guitarist Dickie Betts. Ramblin Man is one of my favorite songs ever made (along with Stairway to Heaven, Echoes, Strange Magic, and Love Reign O'er Me). I highly recommend this album to any Southern Rock Fan.

This cd contain the first and second ABB that are essencials to anyone blues/rock collection. The Almans Brothers with Duane is one of the best jam band in the world!

Great work by the original line-up of the ABB...not quite as much "straight-ahead blues" as the first self-titled release. If you don't already have this or the band's first album, by all means purchase "Beginnings" which combines both works in one convenient 60-minute collection.

Hittin' the Note

No doubt, this is an inspired album. The songs, the singing and the playing are all first rate. Derek Trucks certainly has a style that is much different from Dicky Betts, but he is no less of a player. I gladly give it 4 stars for that alone.

Here's the rub. As great as the intense-hot tone of the guitars are, they never vary...too much continuous brightness and distortion. These guys get a great smokin' hot tone on their electrics, but how about a mellow tone every now and then? What made extended numbers like Whipping Post and Reed work was the variance of dynamics. Granted, ears aren't young, but they felt assaulted after 76 minutes. An acoustic number or two in the midst of the program would have helped. By the time Old Friend comes at the end, ... Read More:

At Fillmore East

I remember the original vinyl album coming out in 1971. I listened to it many times and enjoyed the long versions of several songs including Whipping Post.
The CD came out and several songs were missing and I was disappointed.
Now we have a more complete ( if not complete version ) of the entire concert.
The duel guitars of Duanne Allman and Dicky Betts actually playing lead harmonies was something I dont remember hearing before this came out.
On the liner notes is says the Allman Brothers closed the Fillmore East, what a way to close it out.
If you want to listen to the Allman Brothers you need to get this expanded version, the abbreviated version is good but its like taking a shower with your clothes on, it just dont get it.
