.... thats what you must have if you dont grab this OUTSTANDING cd. only wish I had spotted it years ago, what a great set of tunes!!! A lot of bang for the buck.
Release Date October 25, 1990
Whilst the first half of this album contains the CLASSIC Once In A Lifetime and excellent The Great Curve, Crosseyed And Painless and Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), the second half of this album is rather a snooze fest, with slow, moody songs with sparse instrumentation.
The first four songs are worth this purchase, though be warned about the last four. I particularly recommend the 2006 CD/DVD remaster, the two videos live from German TV show RockPop are great, but the 5.1 remix doesn't do much for me.
Overall, weak compared to their superior previous album, 1979's Fear Of Music. Get that before getting this one.

A brief survey of the musical landscape from about 1963 until the present yields the following results:
1. There are a lot of people who write and perform songs that are about nothing;
2. There are some people who write and perform songs that are about something;
3. There are precious few people who can write songs that are essentially about nothing and in constructing and performing them, turn them into songs that are about something.
David Byrne's unique genius, as far as I can tell, is his ability to slot himself (with band in tow) into the third category. Now perhaps this isn't quite a fair, accurate assessment of his body of work, because in a sense the songs he wrote during this period are indeed about something, ... Read More:

I second the pull up the roots comment! Might be my favorite song on the whole album. This entire album is awesome though, and its really good on a long drive in the summertime.

The Talking Heads have put out some great music in the 1980's up to the mid 90's but I think this album was when they reached a creative pinnacle in their melodic style. David Byrne has the kind of creative mind which produces lyrics and music in a unique way. Because their music was always considered obscure, even within their category, they tended to attract a sub mainstream audience. "Speaking in Tounges" was their first record to get noticed but even so, it was considered eclectic. Then "Stop Making Sense" (the movie) came out and mainstream was going to see it and buying Talking Heads recordings, followed by the soundtrack for "True Stories."
What I like about it is that it's uplifting, fun, and energetic. The music makes you want to get up and dance. ... Read More:

After watching the DVD I knew this is one of the best albums I've ever heard. In my rush for instant gratification I skipped the wait for a CD and downloaded the album. While the clarity itself isn't an issue, the files are full of skips and glitches. They aren't a RAM issue as they occur at the same place regardless of what other work my system is doing. I don't know if this is a file problem, a server problem or what, but if I could I would totally ask for my money back as it is basically impossible to listen without being distracted.
On the plus side, amazon's support center was ridiculously fast and helpful with getting me around my work's content filter...

I appreciate the title of this 2-disc set 'Popular Favorites..." because there is NO such thing as "Best of" when it comes to this rock-fusion group (you are right - I did NOT say "new wave"). If you haven't collected every album they have or if you have just had the great good fortune to have discovered Talking Heads, then this is the CD set for you...unless you have quite a bit more moola and can afford their entire collected box-set then I say GO FOR IT. There are few groups that I would consider buying their life's work - but Talking Heads is definitely at the top, maybe, just maybe behind The Beatles...or maybe Traffic....hmmmmmmmmm - have to give that some thought. Anyway, BUY THIS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO AFFORD THEIR ENTIRE BOX-SET COLLECTION!! And that is close to being ... Read More:

This album is musical stew. Now, at first glance, my first sentence may make about as much sense as the album's name, which is one of my favorite album titles ever. But the stretch from tracks two through nine pretty much runs together for me. It's like a stew, and well, I enjoy parts of the stew more than others.
First, let's talk about our pre- and post-stew tracks. You've got the charged-up, catchy New Wave rocker "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel" - one of my favorite Talking Heads songs, and certainly the best on the album. The two post-stew songs are quite good as well: the funky cover of "Take Me to the River", a just Top 40 hit for the group; and "The Big Country", a country-New Wave hybrid that mocks rural American values.
Then you've got the stew. The stew ... Read More:

Debut album for Talking Heads, they were one of the earliest new wave bands, and one of the most well-loved by the arty and punk in-crowd. It's not much of a surprise then that this didn't sell too well. For one, it's a young band still crystallizing their sound and style. For another, despite the disturbing power of the frantic classic, "Psycho Killer," it was a minor hit at best, and not an easy sell either. Most (including me) only picked this up after their later success.
Like the band, "77" improves as it progresses. Unlike their bigger (and better) albums to come ("Fear of Music," "Remain in Light"), the songs on the second half are superior to the sometimes tepid first side. Byrne and crew almost sound reined in and tentative on songs like "New Feeling" and "Happy Day" ... Read More:

Retail Nightmare really is a nightmare. They never mailed my CD i ordered - and when I asked them - they said OH sorry we mailed 3 others that day and no problems with them. They said they would mail it out again which is wierd, it seems like they would be wondering where the copy they initially mailed was.
