If you've never heard of CSN and you want to get an idea what these guys are all about, pick this up. Granted, it doesn't have the classics with Neil Young, but that's all right. These guys rock as either a three piece or a four piece vocal band. You can enjoy some good old-fashioned folk/protest rock from one of the original bands that did that kind of music. There's a bit of everything here. I'm really too young to see these guys in their true heyday (call it '68 to early 80s), but they are still relevant 40 years after their debut album. When I was 13, my older cousin took my brother and me to an ice cream shoppe in Westport, CT (don't know if it's still there, don't even recall the name). The shoppe had an area that sold candy, merchandise and vinyl records. My cousing bought this album for me. It was my first exposure to rock (being raised on Mantovani, Peter Nero, 101 Strings and Perry Como). The shop was a colorful, magical place, and my cousin took the lp from the shelf and put it in my hands. When I played it at home I was blown away by the harmonies and lush sounds that originated from vinyl records. This is my first rock record, and has always been my favorite.

Blue grass with an edge. Has a modern touch, but not too much to ruin the traditional flavor. Thoroughly enjoyed almost every track.

The 80's feel and overtones on this album come mainly from the vocals, which is just an observation and not a negative, a style of sound but not a replication. I find that much of the musical sound is much more on the 'newer' side, with well-written, well-sung, well-played, and thoughtful songs that are quite good overall. It's an excellent album, but not a superb one (the superb ranks are very few), good enough to put in your player and just let it run through... because all of the songs are good to my ears, some great, which makes it worth owning because so many albums put out these days have only but 2-3 good, or great (or just one!), songs at best and the rest just seem to totally suck. "Stop" never fails to get me, no matter how many listens. Same thing with "Albert's Shuffle", w/ or w/o horns. All in all, a brilliant album.

Look at all the other reviews of this disc. They either say "I love Crosby, Stills, and Nash's music, so I love this" or they say "I love Stephen Stills' music, so I love this." But what would you say if you didn't already know this music from its later, more polished versions? You'd hear a good but occasionally sloppy guitarist singing folky, country-tinged songs, about half of them of very good quality. Some of these songs didn't show up in his later records for a good reason: they're dull. These demo versions of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and "Helplessly Hoping" are well worth a listen, but "Wooden Ships" has often been performed better.
