Songs in the Key of Life

While it is certainly stating the obvious that this album is clearly a masterpiece of accomplishment, there is one song that I feel may be too often overlooked. The song "If" is to my ears is one of the most beautifully sung and heartfelt performances of the 20 century. I have recently reintroduced myself to "songs", and while like many double Lps there is fat on the plate, the strong tunes well out way in weaker ones. This disc will be listened to a hundred years from now as a reference to that century, and hopefully many to come!

Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast)

Rent is an important production, because it puts a face to the AIDS crisis and this was especially new when the production first came to Broadway. The music to Rent is wonderful and spans the breadth of the pop/rock genre. The Broadway soundtrack is as crisp of a recording as the motion picture soundtrack, but overall is a much better version. The Broadway version includes a number of humorous phone calls, additional songs and it seems have more feeling to them. All of the songs on the Rent soundtrack are great, but my favorites by far are Rent and La Vie Boheme. Both take a satirical approach to contemporary culture that is refreshing and needed when discussing the issue of "social outcasts". You can't go wrong with this recording of the Rent soundtrack.

Talking Book

this album was recorded in the early 1970's easily Stevie's most creative period. All of the albums from this point in time are just superb, starting with Music Of My Mind, this one and Inner Visions, every one gets five stars, no boudt a doubt it. Every song a winner.

Fulfillingness' First Finale

"Fulfillingness' First Finale" does not get the recognition it deserved. While "Innervisions" and "Songs In The Key of Life" were both brilliant 5-star worthy masterpieces, neither of them come close to the beauty that is "Fulfillingness' First Finale."

Of all the records Motown put out during its existence, none have the amount of soul that is found in this album. The songs range from moody and melancholy to cheerful and uplifting, although the tempo is relatively slow and soothing through the whole album.

"Smile Please," the album's first song, sets the tone for the whole album, and is one of the best openers of Wonder's career. The keyboarding and vocals are slow and smooth, with moody but uplifting lyrics. The song is a definite gem. And this is only the ... Read More:

Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration

Quincy Jones already rocks my world. I have nothing but respect for him and the level of musical excellence that has always surrounded anything he put his considerable mind and talent to. But this re-imagining of Handel's Messiah from an African-American perspective is exceptional, extraordinary, unabated joy--especially in "And He Shall Purify" and "Hallelujah!" I am a middle-aged white musician/pianist/voice teacher in New York City. I got my Master's at Indiana University in voice. I was raised a Southern-Baptist even! I only offer up this information to suggest what an unlikely candidate I might be to enjoy this CD. I can't stop smiling and moving with these extraordinary performances when I put this CD on. At the Close of a Century

As much as I love Stevie Wonder as an artist, it's almost impossible to buy every last album he's ever released. Not only that, it would be way too costly to attempt (though I would say every 70s album SHOULD be bought). This set is the epitome of what a compilation set should be -- virtually every meaningful song he has made over his vast career. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to know what Stevie was about in one stop.

This is not the album to buy if you're wanting to have only one SW recording.
Good, but not up to the standards of his other works.
