My first Soulive experience was seeing them live at Bumpershoot the Seattle Music Fesival this past summer and since then I've been a fan. Granted, I hadn't heard them before the addition of Toussaint (who I think is great) I thought they were amazing. So I picked up this album and was more than pleased. I later found out that they had a ton of other albums minus Toussaint and they are awesome as well. I think you just to have to take it for what it is. I think most of the people leaving poor reviews on here are just bitter that its not what they were expecting from them. I suggest picking it up.

Roughly 10 years after founding the seminal jam band Moonboot Lover in the early 1990s, Buffalo-born brothers Alan & Neal Evans teamed up with the naturally gifted upstart guitarist Eric Krasno to form the funky organ trio Soulive. This modern incarnation of the classic B-3 organ trio (ala Jimmy Smith) took the music scene by storm at the turn of the millenium and has since toured and/or recorded with everyone from Dave Matthews to the Neville Brothers to Talib Kweli. This range of collaborators mirrors the broadness of Soulive's sound, and their mix of jazz, funk, soul and hip hop is arguably the freshest sound to have hit the jam band circuit. With Soulive, every track they've ever recorded seriously grooves, thus Steady Groovin is a retrospective ... Read More:

This is a great follow up to Soulive's first album. Now they're signed to probaly the greatest record company in the country; Blue Note, which also hosts Medeski Martin Wood, Terence Blanchard, Joe Lavano, Charlie Hunter, Cassandra Wilson, and many more.
I am a huge fan of organ trios. Sometimes I wish they just recorded with the three of them, but the horns do sound nice. This is tight grooves. Soulive are the kings of modern soul funk jazz.
Soulive hasn't released a studio album in a while. And it's really bugging me. I want to hear how these guys are progressing. With their last studio release, Next, Soulive proved to have some soul left in them, but we haven't gotten anything in a while.

I saw the band this morning on the CBS news show and dug it so I picked this up today. I was expecting to hear the tight grooves they were playing and instead was treated to a long-form hip hop jazz journey.
Took a second to get used to but damm cool, just ordered the live album from amazon, interested to hear the evolution.

If you are someone who listens to nothing but hip-hop music, you will probably think you are hearing "jazz" when you rip this. That's what scares me - that and all of the other things that Blue Note seems to be willing to do to water down their brand. To someone who listens to a lot of jazz (actual jazz) and blues and rock/pop/soul and classical and world music, like me, this stuff will sound like slick formulaic clap-track party music that leaves no back-beat behind, with very little improvisational interest, and absolutely no compositional interest. I wonder how the band can even keep these tunes straight in their own heads when they're trying to play them live, but then I do have to remind myself that Eskimos are reported to use over 50 different words for "blubber" ... This is one of my favorite albums produced by Soulive. Any fan of the Hammond B-3 organ will be amazed by the talent and style that Neal Evans brings to the organ. Having said that, the BEST song on this album is Azucar. Azucar has a real groovy beat to it, and I can't get enough of the B-3 on this song. Steppin' also has a superba beat that will get anyone out of their chair. The last song I'll speak about is So Live!. This song is 11+ minutes of pure improvisation. About to the 5 minute mark is where you can hear Neal's wailing organ; trembling over the beat. Overall, this album is a great start for anyone just getting a feel for Soulive.

I started with their 'No Place Like Soul Album' and worked my way backwards; eventually found this album. This has turned out to be one of my favorite Soulive albums. The best cuts are 'Cash's Dream', 'Turn it out', and 'Right on'. I wish I could have seen them perform 'Right on' live. Get this album.
