Release Date August 28, 2007
Not being completely familiar with Sly and the Family Stone's discography, I can really say almost nothing as to the validity of this disk as a collection. But what I will say is that upon first listen, this blew me away. It is almost unbelievable how many of these songs have quietly, and others not so quietly, become a part of our culture, and all of these songs are fantastic and memorable. Sometimes the problem is that the songs end too fast, just when the listener starts to beg for more, but that makes this even more fun and irresistible to explore. What Sly did upon the making of this music is remarkable. The songs are catchy, fun, and energetic as well as skillfully played, but at the same time they really mean something and teach valuable ... by: Sly & the Family Stone

Release Date April 24, 2007
I WANNA TAKE YOU HIGHER! man, back in the day Sly was the bomb! If I remember correctly Sly was the first concert I ever saw, back in 197x at Madison Square Garden. I used to wear this album out. You can't go wrong with this CD in your collection. Great songs with catchy arrangements, especially the horns. And oh so funky! C'mon now, you gotta have some Sly in your collection.

Sly moving the Family Funk more towards James Brown, using a more angular approach than he had been doing combined with interesting drum/bass sounds. Plus the scratch tracks before the metamorph gives us a look at the "before & after." BONUS!

There's a Riot Goin' On

by: Sly & the Family Stone

Release Date April 24, 2007
Altamont is the burial site of the idealism and hope that riddled the late 1960s. Inspired by the community pacifism of Woodstock, the Rolling Stones sought to create an extension of the mentality that surrounded Woodstock by creating a similar festival on the West coast. What was intended to be a celebration of the ideals that fostered American culture in the late '60s was, however, mired in tragedy (all of which is presented in the excellent documentary Gimme Shelter, well worth watching). Hope disappeared. Death followed. The ideals that marked the 1960s died at Altamont.

One man, one album, would revisit the corpse of the '60s. If Altamont was the death and burial, this album would be the exhumation, assuring the decade was, indeed, dead. ... Read More:

Sly & the Family Stone - Greatest Hits [Epic]

by: Sly & the Family Stone

Release Date October 25, 1990
Sly and the Family Stone were a huge band back in the 60's. They had a few monster hits that still receive radio play to this very day. All the big hits are on this greatest hits album (on side two). However, those songs pale in comparison to all the appealing funky tunes on the first side. As you can see, I have this album in vinyl, and side one contains one underrated song after another. Side two is pretty decent as well. A band you need to explore, and why not start with this fabulous introduction to this legendary band. Last night I was having an absolute blast with this album from my parents record collection. While I'm mainly a rock fan, Sly and the Family Stone appeal to fans of rock, soul and funk. A must buy album.

My copy of "There's a Riot Goin' On" won't play the title track!!! Unfortunately, I was very busy during the time that I bought it, and I neither complained or sent it back. Oh, well - these discs are mandatory for anyone who truly loves funk, and the remasters are supposedly a limited release - go for it.

Anthology

by: Sly & the Family Stone

Release Date October 25, 1990
....I hear those tunes two years after they first came on the scene and they sound as if they were productions of falsely pumped up egos who end up bragging to you that they have supremely suckered you outta your money. AND your valuable time. What chutzpah. That's another reason why I have been currently been into the Public Domain ol' style 78s and unknown roots and blues here lately....but that's another story.

I put on this anthology (the 'Essentials' also is kick'ss, but it duddn't have that glammo Richard Avedon photog on its cover) and skip those "Wanna Take You Higher..." years and go directly to "Thank You Falettin'..." (with its often sampled and imitated gut-tar lines) and play those tunes from Sly's Muddy-Waters-Tom (Supa)-Flye-Larry-Graham-Last-Days-Rusty ... Read More:
