I'd never heard of Saul Williams before this record. I wasn't really much into hip-hop, anyway. Well, on the other hand, I'm a NIN fan, so...
Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Reznor, I heard of the digital release of 'The Rise & Liberation of Niggy Tardust!'. I was quite thrilled at first at what could be seen as an Internet-scale experiment, with the 'pay and support an artist/don't pay but please spread the word' choice, etc.

So I was in.
And I didn't regret it. It even became of one those 'soundtrack of your life' albums you never stop listening to for months.

Saul Williams offers listeners a socially-conscious, honest, musically mature and lyrically transcendent collection of songs. Though the album is primarily defined as hip-hip, and to be sure there are some great hip-hop tracks, what is also found here can more accurately be defined as "a master of spoken-word poetry accompanied by music." Fans of his style and performance will not be disappointed. Furthermore, varying musical influences lift this album above the confines of a strictly hip-hop recording, such as the industrial beats of "List of Demands (Reparations)" or the muted rock performance of "Telegram." Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...

Merry Andrew

It took a lot of research to find out what film "Everything is Tickettyboo" came from -- "Merry Andrew" -- and I defy anyone not to be cheered by this song. It never fails to make me smile! I looked for it for years, and bought the CD on the strength of that song alone; however, the rest of the songs on the CD are pretty good too, as you might expect from Danny Kaye. I would really like to see the film. Any hope of a DVD?

This is a wonderful representation of the blending of Slam Poetry and Music for a common cause. It is also an accurate representation of why Saul Williams and Slam poetry should be added to the list for Contemporary American Literature. Amethyst Rock Star

This man truly has a gift when it comes to word usage. Simply put, I love this CD. It comes off very different(I think thats why I like it so much). Something like a combination of Slam Poetry, Hip Hop, and Rock. If your growing tired of mainstream music and looking for something new, refreshing, and different... look no further.
