I'm actually listening to this right now, and it's a CD that's been on my mind lately as I recently rediscovered her song "'Till the Morning Comes", which I played for my girlfriend the other night because I anticipated it would so greatly resonate with her. I bought this CD really only being aware of Roberta's hits "Killing Me Softly", "Where is the Love", "Feel Like Making Love", and after purchasing realized I was familiar with great tunes like "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love", and "The Closer I Get To You". If someone told me that this was part of her 20 best songs (17/20) then I'd certainly believe it. I've come to enjoy the rest of the songs on the CD, and there's great variety in tone, mood, and actual lyrical content--majorly revolving ... Read More:

That's the impression I get from this amazing album. The atmosphere is intimate, like Ms. Flack is performing just for me. The sound is minimalist but stately and assured. Though there are bass, drums and other instruments accompanying her, Roberta's piano and unique voice are at the forefront of the mix. "First Take" is quite simply an essential CD for any music lover to have. From the political to the personal songs, it's the real deal. The songs that literally bring tears to my eyes are the slower ones such as the incomparably beautiful and moving "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", the powerfully spiritual "I Told Jesus" and the profoundly touching "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men". Roberta gets political with tracks such as the angry "Compared ... Read More:

I was 8 yr old when this album came out and
it got heavy rotation from my mother and her freinds!
The musical marriage of Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack
was just musical perfection!
Both were prodigious talents vocal-wise and
in their fluency as instrumentalists!
There are a few covers on here..the only one I
could've done without was their rendition of Aretha's
classic "Baby, I Love You" because they brought
absolutely nothing to it.
But make no errors!
They absolutely put their foot in "I Who Have Nothing"
with it's deep bluesy longing that just captures the
pathos perfectly of wanting someone who doesn't want
you as much as you want them! (Woo!--Timeless!) ... Read More:

First,I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Amazon for asking me to express my opinion about this CD.I have always enjoyed Roberta Flack's voice, but somehow I never got around to including two of her biggest hits("Killing Me Softly With His Song" and "Feel Like Makin' Love")in my collection. For many years,I've had the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and the album that contains it("First Take")as well as her biggest duets with the late Donny Hathaway in my collection and now I have all of these songs on one disc. When I'm feeling in a mellow mood,I've often thought of her songs. There is something truly remarkable about her voice which no other singer possesses. The closest comparison that I can think of is Aretha Franklin, and I'm sure ... When this album came out in August 1973 as Atlantic 19154 it quickly became a best-seller, containing two songs that were also hit singles, albeit slightly different from the LP versions heard here.
The first was Killing Me Softly With His Song, inspired by the effect a Don McLean performance had on singer/songwriter Lori Lieberman (although it was written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox), which peaked at # 1 Billboard Pop Hot 100 and # 2 on each of the R&B and Adult Contemporary (AC) charts early in 1973. The other is Jesse, written by Janis Ian, which finished at # 3 AC/# 19 R&B/# 30 Hot 100 in October 1973 b/w No Tears (In The End), which is also included here.
In 1995, at the dawning of the CD age, it was common for the big U.S. ... Read More:
