Billy Lee Riley, a multi-instrumentalist with a raw, rockabilly sound, was to be the Sun label's replacement for Elvis after they sold the latter's contract to RCA. He could certainly belt out a tune with the best of his contemporaries like Charlie Feathers, Johnny Carroll, and Mac Curtis but, also like them, hit single status eluded him. His best, obviously, was the pounding Red Hot but even that, while played extensively throughout the South, could not crack the national charts.

Floating World

I have almost all of Riley Lee's work and I love his style. Due to his Eastern musical roots and it never occured that he would do an album with a Western feel to it. Lee does show some of his Eastern flair on a few of the tracks, but Marshall Mcguire's harp sets a classical/celtic tone that is perfectly matched by Lee's lyrical adaptation. This really is an amazing album + I have no clue who Marshall Mcguire is, but his playing is sublime; as far as I have heard I don't think Grand Master Riley Lee has ever been accompanied by a more apt musician.

One of the wildest rockabilly performers! He started at Sun and contributed as a sideman to many a classic Sun session. He played harmonica, guitar, bass and drums. His band the Little Green Men (Roland Janes and James Van Eaton) became Sun house band. "Red Hot", "Flyin' Saucers Rock & Roll" are outstanding rockabilly numbers and other songs are outstanding too.

Billy Lee Riley was one of the early Sun artists, just before they picked up Elvis. The story goes that Billy Lee had a bit of a temper - didn't get on with the fellow who started Sun. There were so many artists being grabbed up by Sun at the time, and it appears because Billy Lee was a little too cantankerous, other artists got the records and publicity. He remains bitter about it to this day.
I am not as fond of Billy Lee's music when he sings RockaBilly - not as great as say, Sonny Burgess. But no one can beat him when it comes to the blues.
