I am no Cats fanatic, and I thought that buying the "Selections" CD at a lower price would satisfy me. However, I've watched the Cats movie too many times to count (I have a 4-year old who's obsessed), and was disappointed with the "Selections" CD. It's missing the Grizabella song (although it has a track titled "Grizabella", that's not really it) and other small pieces that I wish were included. The singing is not that great, save for Betty Buckley who sings Grizabella. She does a great job; however they tinkered with the music for "Memory" so it sounds like a really bad hit from the '80s.
If you want a cheaper CD to share songs with your 4-year old, then this one is great. If you really enjoy the music to Cats, then maybe the other CDs ... Read More:

A good musical, yet not the greatest by Lloyd Webber. Actually, the song "Memory" is the only one in our memories. The rest seems to me quite average. We should have in mind that a few years later Webber wrote wonderful songs for each one of his musicals: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, SUNSET BOULEVARD and the unfortunate WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND, besides his previous masterpiece, JESUSCHRIST SUPERSTAR, with almost an entire collection of classical and marvelous songs. I saw CATS in Broadway back in 1992 and I saw it again last year here in Chile: I guess some cats were left on the plane on their way down here because the southamerican tour production looked quite poor compared to the Broadway version. Es dificil dejar de sentir admiración por este extraordinario ensamble vocal Inglés. Su capacidad interpetativa es amplísima y la forma en que sus voces se acoplan es inmaculada.En este disco interpretan arreglos de canciones de amor (y tambien de desamor) de diferentes épocas y compositores.TODO el disco es una mágnifica experiencia musical :el humor de "Chitarra d'amor",la belleza de "She's like the swallow" o el dulce desencanto de "Quand tu dors près de moi"; mencionando algunos ejemplos.
La unica objeción que tengo es que el no esten integrados todos los textos en el librillo del CD.
Yo recomendaría a cualquier amante de la música a escuchar este CD lo mas pronto posible.

This London version of CATS "blows away" the broadway version. Anyone who has listened to both will surely agree!! If you think the broadway one is better, then you don't "know" music or musical talent when you hear it. There is so much passion in the London cast. They are not "going through the motions". A must have for fans of musicals and the theater.

I loved the show when it came out and had the original cast recording on a record, but this is not it. The songs on this CD just do not have the feeling, emotion and pop that they deserve. These pop singers do not understand the characters, let alone the story, therefore do not do the songs justice. If you want to get a CD of Starlight Express, take the time and spend the money on the original cast recording!

Marilyn Horne: The Men in My Life

I'm a fan of Marilyn Horne, but this recording was truly a mistake. These songs are *so* overdone anyway, they really ought to be shelved for the next 50 years. But on top of that, Ms. Horne is rarely in tune here, and if you add to that Thomas Hampson and Jerry Hadley, you won't be able to fast forward through it fast enough. Kudos to Spiro Malas, who manages to come off unscathed. When you've got Marilyn Horne (in her repertoire), you don't need any of these beasts.
