The first time I heard this CD, I didn't like it. The arrangements seemed to have wandered too far away from the song's country roots. On second and third and fourth, etc., listening I love it. The gem is the ironic Roger Miller/Dwight Yoakam song, It Only Hurts Me When I Cry.

Another plus is that he seems like a nice guy - at least a civic minded one. I gave up on commercial radio decades ago, so I rely on venues like Earth Day in Nashville's Centennial Park and benefits to alert me to performers I would enjoy.

As another reviewer pointed out, there's a brat pack feel to some of Malo's solo work. At the live performance, he sang the Dean Martin hit, Sway, which was fun and tipped us that that's deliberate.

My husband and I are great fans of Raul Malo. Quite a few of our favorite songs are on the tape. Love the Latin music. Love it!

Pat Flynn is flat out one of the best guitar players you don't know you have heard. Since the breakup of Flynn's former band, New Grass Revival, he has worked as a studio performer. New Grass Revival was even more iconoclastic than The Mavericks. Both groups suffered from a refusal stick to accepted categories, which the music industry was not elastic enough to accept. Flynn's solo CD efforts haven't taken off, but he may be sticking too close to hearth and home and not promoting them.

Dave Pomeroy is a good guy and a great performer, also. I don't know anything about Rob Ickes, but just the fact these guys let him play with them says a lot.

As a huge Mavericks and Raul fan, I was delighted to see a Christmas CD! But I was disappointed that several tunes sounded like mere Dean Martin impersonations. Raul should just sing! I don't know who produced this CD, maybe Raul did. But the concept was off on several tunes. I can recommend this to big fans of his, you'll find several songs you love. I hope to see a second volume released with more Raul, less Vegas.
