Actually I just ordered some second hand books about achitecture as Christmas gifts, and as a last thought added for myself a CD with some New Orleans Jazz from Preservation Hall, which I visited a few years ago. I was very surprised when about a week later I received one separate box all the way from Auckland, New Zealand, which just contained the New Orleans CD. The two books, coming from different book stores arrived as separate shipments - both in proper time before Christmas. The total postage - for three shipments - was very reasonable. Best regards

I purchased this set because I love New Orleans jazz and I had been to the Preservation Hall several times over the years. I already have several of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's LPs. Because of Hurricane Katrina, I didn't know if the Band would be producing any more music. So I bought "The Best of Preservation Hall Jazz Band" CDs. I wasn't disappointed, and I'm very happy to see that the French Quarter was spared major damage. It is the birth place of a truly American art form: Dixieland Jazz.

I saw the original Preservation Hall Band several times with the Humphreys playing clarinet and trumpet. If you want the best of the best, get this first, and then the second and third volumes. I realize that nothing stays the same (the Humpreys were already in their eighties when I saw them), but there is no better listening on the face of the earth. I bought the vinyl albums at the shows, and still listen to them when I can, although it's a little hard to take them in the car with me. Thus the CDs. By the way, if you go to www.preservationhall.com, you can pick up an absolute gem called Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall band. Recorded in 1964. One of the best 2 1/2 hours of dixieland ever recorded, and almost completely unknown, since ... Read More:

Duke Dejan is one of many special musicians,I never heard of before I picked up this excellent Preservation Hall cd,inspired by the then 88 year-old singer/saxophonist and former leader of New Orleans' Olympia Brass Band.In this cd,his character comes through in his Creole-accented English; in the liner notes to the cd,most of us will pick up a new word,"piran" or Godfather, which is how Dejan referred to himself to bass player Benjamin Jaffe, whose family runs Preservation Hall. The cd which kicks off with 'Corinna,Corinna' includes some beautiful soloing(I'm partial to trumpeter Wendell Brunious. But this one's for Duke Dejan;RIP.It's his heart.

This is jazz at its best. NOT Kenny G, Not the frantic bop of the fifties or Miles Davis's brews. Other so-called jazz artists may be good, but this is how it started--this is REAL jazz. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band plays this American music as it sounded in the early 20th century. The group plays with a tight ensemble sound, but leaves plenty of room for very tasteful solos. Unlike other "dixieland" bands, they are not rushed... each piece is played at a relaxed tempo, which allows the listener to appreciate each and every note without feeling as if the band is dragging. The tunes on this disc are excellent as well. When I bought the disc, I was familiar with about half of the pieces, but now they're all special to me. Technically, ... Read More:
