This is the original Orson Welles "Mercury Theater on the Air" production of October 30, 1938, that fooled so many CBS radio listeners. Even though Welles announced at the beginning of the program that it was only a fictional dramatization, many people tuned in late, and hearing what sounded like legitimate live news reports that killer Martians were attacking the United States, thousands panicked. The broadcast prompted a suitably contrite apology from Welles -- just 23 at the time -- on behalf of the Mercury Theater and CBS the next morning. The "War of the Worlds" is a classic, Welles is a classic, and any collection of important, historic radio broadcasts is incomplete without this landmark recording -- digitally restored and remastered ... This cd set of The Mercury Theatre On the Air is oustanding. For years I have tried to search for cd verions of Dracula and The War if Worlds in vain. Thanks to this cd collection and high quality of the recording it was worth the wait. Dracula is the treasure here. Orson plays a number of roles and the acting of all the Mercury Theate players is the superb. This is a true gem for any fan of Orson, in the words at of Orson himself..."There are wolves there are vampires, such things do exsist".
Release Date July 10, 2001
Good value with Dracula as added bonus. Orson Welles broadcast was a classic.
Shame my original purchase was lost and was sent several weeks later.
A bit unfair of Amazon to refund & recharge my card to process my replacement which cost more than original purchase due to change in exchange rate! ;-(

The transfer is terrible - the sound awful- but if you want to see a great film for hardly any money - this is not a terrible choice.
Welles is one of the few directors who could ever dream of capturing the clausterphobia of Kafka's writing - and although it is not a perfect vision - it is all the same a great piece of cinematic art.
