I appreciate what Trent tried to do by avoiding the record labels, but this is lacking. It is essentially a collection of noise and single riffs. Not much in the way of actual songs. Half of the tracks are little more than noise that don't lead anywhere. Might be good for background music. The next album "The Slip" is much better.

Preface: I have been a NIN fan since someone thought I'd appreciate an advance copy of "Pretty Hate Machine" WAAAAAAY back when. Also, unlike many I know, "Broken" is far and away my favorite album and "With Teeth" gets equal play as "Downward Spiral". I think that makes me a freak among freaks. I think all NIN albums are stellar compared to most of the junk out there. However, after I got sick from listening to "Fixed" way back when, I thought I'd skip the NIN secondary market altogether. I have kept true to that until now.
The truth be told, I wasn't going to purchase this disk either, in fact I was waiting for a surround sound version of "year zero" to come out (BTW "Downward Spiral" NEVER sounded as good as it does in 5.1 it is unnervingly ... Read More:

The Downward Spiral

I loved The Downward Spiral cd by Nine Inch Nails, however I do not recommend the music video for Closer. The cd comes across as deep, moody and gloomy. So you are probably asking why I like this cd right about now. Well the music is catchy. Once you listen to the whole cd you start singing the lyrics even if you do not like what they are actually trying to portray. I recommend this cd.

Pretty Hate Machine

Trent Reznor's first album as Nine Inch Nails and still to this date one of his best pieces of work. I haven't listened to this in such a long time, that I had forgotten just how raw, yet powerful, it was. I highly recommend this album to anyone curious about NIN. I think it speaks volume of Reznor's head space at this time in his life. He has really grown as a person, his music reflects that growth, but the depth of his older work still rings true today. This album really helped put industrial music on the map and change the shape and form of our music today. Pick it up, and get blown away.

Simply put this is a concept album masterpiece! It flows together very poetic lyrics it also strikes emotion on the listener.

well, no, it's not really, but it may as well be.

here's the thing, in retrospect this is clearly a transitional album. this is trent reznor playing with a band trying to find his sound, trying to get back on track after the commercial failure of "the fragile". he's trying to focus and update his sound, without losing any of his edge. in many ways he accomplishes this, with modern-sounding production and an attempt at balancing noise with dance beats and catchy hooks.

the problem is, he doesn't get there. he's experiementing with different sounds and ideas trying to find what works, but only a few succeed. listening to the follow-up "year zero" you can see where "with teeth" was heading. the political ideas, the post-apocalyptic imagery, ... Read More:

Broken

I love this record!!!! Broken is probably the most aggressive NIN album yet made...verry hard hitting angry industrial metal. As always the music is amazing, verry well composed, NIN truly is an exceptional artist.
