What's up with fans crying "sellout" over this album? If you're a longtime fan and have all these songs already relax - this disc wasn't meant for you. As if you don't have any 'best ofs' of other artists in your collection. Any artist with a catalog as extensive as Neil's should have a few compilations for newbies and casual listeners. At least there isn't a new track on this disc that isn't available elsewhere. Now THAT'S a cheap sellout gimmick.
That said, this compilation could have picked up where "Decade" left off.
I hadn't really got on board with Neil Young for a number of years before his Living With War album. I was pretty pumped up when that one came out, and I think it enabled me to get into the other one released within the same year Prairie Wind, which may have been the better (yet softer) of the two.
The third release in line, was this one: Chrome Dreams II. Which takes it's name, somewhat mockingly from an unreleased 1977 album, Chrome Dreams. That story of that album being lost in a fire, is either true or untrue, I've heard bootlegs claiming to be the album, and it sounds like a bunch of demo versions of songs that were later finished on other albums. Perhaps Chrome Dreams II is the same thing. Just a bunch of outakes. The song ... Read More:

This is still one of my favorite albums of all time, and I just discovered how good it sounds in headphones (great stereo spread), however I am listening to Oh lonesome me, and it is in mono-I think I remember that from when I had it on LP. Anyway, I don't think old Neil did any better than here. The songs are all great, and his voice is in perfect shape!

Great CD. I bought it for my husband, he's always been a Fats fan and he loves it. All the artists did a wonderful job. Worth every penney.
Release Date October 25, 1990
How can an album as important as this one be allowed to remain in it's current state of "not yet remastered" disrepair? Forcrisake, every other chunk of trite music out there from the 70's and 80's has been remastered. Either Neil is going to launch the mother of all box sets, or someone has just gotten very lazy.

In my opinion, this is Neil Young's finest album. The album is sparse, with personal, enigmatic, and sometimes bleak lyrics. I first heard this when I was lucky enough to find a used LP in a head shop when I was in college back in the late 90s. Needless to say, the album blew my doors off. I'd already gotten in to Neil, courtesy of a classmate, but this album proved to be a real find. I was elated when it was finally released on CD.
On the Beach is probably my favorite Neil song of all time. The lyrics are interesting and the emotion conveyed is incredible. In addition, I don't think Neil's guitar ever seemed as plaintive as it does here. Simply beautiful despair. Crack a bottle of wine and put this one on with the lights low.
