I heard the interview on NPR and was excited about the group. I bought the CD and it was odd rather than exciting.

Nomo is funky, frantic music. As such it is the perfect soundtrack for chase scenes and montages of Shaft walking down the street. Before you get offended and start to snap off an angry letter, you can't imagine what high praise that soundtrack sentence is meant to be.

The percussion wades neck deep into polyrhythms that call to mind generations of African drummers, the bass-lines rest firmly in the tradition of American funk, and everything else sticks closely to the basics of big band jazz. Nomo hit the ground already at full sprint and top quality with "Nu Tone." No build-up here, just right into things, and we hope you catch up. I've been listening to jazz and world music for almost four decades, i grew up on Coltrane and Miles and all of it... This group is simply unbelievalbe. Yes, it's very painful how unknown they are. It's been many years since i've been this excited about a new group/CD on the horizon. Fantatsic stuff, just check it out!

Haydn: String Quartets Op. 50

This is a SUPERB recording of Haydn's "Prussian" quartets at a relatively LOW price. The Nomos Quartet is an ensemble of very talented young German musicians. Once I put the first disc in my CD player, I sat enraptured for 2 1/2 hours, until I had listened to all six quartets -- something I rarely do in one sitting. An added bonus are the liner notes, which provide unusally detailed descriptions and analyses of each movement. Highly recommended.

Set You Free

Failte! Nomos is a young group like Danu, but unlike Danu, they are generally unknown outside of Ireland. Their enthusiasm for traditional Irish music is obvious. "Set You Free" is about not paying the price forever and perhaps the British occupation of Ireland. Bean Dubh an Ghleanna is an old Gaelic song I am accustomed to hearing in pubs. Put a lad with a good voice in front of a pub audience with this song about that dark lass from the Glen and a sprig of Hawthorne on his lapel for the Tuatha De Danann and Leprachans, and you have the only method to quiet down a pub." I Won't Be Afraid Any More

If I recall correctly, "Nomos" means something along the lines of "logic and reason." Well, that may be their name but in my book, these musicians defy logic -- and they definitely defy the laws of gravity. The level of playing is beyond my meager comprehension, the arrangements respect tradition while politely turning it on its head, and the tunes -- well. The verve, the audacity, the sheer joy of flying -- just listen to the spin they give "Andy Renwick's Ferret" and if your hair isn't smoldering even a little, well, I have no use for you. ;-)

Their second CD, "Set You Free," is fantastic too, but there's something about this one, their first, that just grabs you right out of the box. In fact, I have somehow lost (i.e., never got back) ... Read More:
