Years later, I'm still disappointed. Years later I still cannot listen to this album all the way through without cringing.

I don't know exactly where this album would rank on some kind of official list or a huge vote for the top 10 Heavy Metal albums, but on my website I ranked this timeless masterpiece 3rd behind Reign In Blood. I did have a really hard time deciding if it should be 2nd or 3rd though. Anyway, enough about that, here is my review.
FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE - This is easily one of the greatest album openers in heavy metal history and i love how Hetfield sings the song and the lyrics are great. The solo is very solid but nothing too amazing. My favorite part is probally the end of the song where they make it sound like a nuclear bomb is falling and then exploding, you can hear a rumbling sound at the very end like an explosion. A perfect ending to ... Read More:

Good CD, but it sounds like James is shouting to me from a car window as it's driving by. I don't know if they can remaster it properly or just should go ahead and re-record it along with Ride the Lightning and Kill 'em all.

In an attempt to follow up their masterpiece, "Master Of Puppets", Metallica basically took that album's formula and turned it up a notch. Indeed, the songs on, "...And Justice For All", have that same progressive edge as the ones on, "Puppets", with the layers of guitars, complex time signatures, and the shear length of the songs but while the previous album was set to 10, this one's set to 11. Two of the songs clock in at over nine minutes and at nine songs long and over an hour in length, this was their longest album at that time.
The progressive formula is taken as far as it can go on this album. Many of the songs have multiple riffs and doom and gloom lyrics that put to shame anything on their previous albums. It should be noted that the production ... Read More:

I thought that this was a great buy especially considering it gave me a better idea of where one of the greatest bands drew its inspiration. Everything from folk style songs (e.g. Whiskey in a Jar, Turn the Page, and Tuesday's Gone) to wupass heavy songs (e.g. So What, Am I Evil, Blitzkrieg) to the excellent cover of Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy" are all some of the great variety you can see here. Many complain that Metallica became sellouts for ditching their traditional thrash, but I think this goes to show that they wanted to become more accessible by crunching human stories into some of their later work instead of singing constantly about revenge, death, and chaos like countless other metal acts.
Though the first disk has the more recent songs that vear into ... Read More:

I wouldn't really rate this as a "true" live album as the symphony concept was a rare event, and not something that truly portrays the songs as you would here them if Metallica was touring today.
S&M came out when i was in high school. Being a band dork, this was a great fusion of something I was fairly familiar with (classical ensembles) and Metallica, something I was just starting to get a taste for (its hard to dive right in when they were coming off of crapfests like Load and Re-load!) For all their missteps in the studio, they still had a great live act and a real wealth of great material. This turned me on to metal in all its forms and potential.
The first three tracks, this start's out with Morricone's "Ecstasy of gold", were a real challenge for me. ... Read More:

.....not a METAL album, but a ROCK album.
Problem with a lot of hardcore metalheads is that they can't venture out of their narrow views, and I say that as someone who has been a Metal fan for many years, but not ONLY a metal fan.
The album is a bit too long, some more quality control could have been exercised and it would have been a 5-star 60-minute album.
No, it's no Master of Puppets, but it's not meant to be !
