The nice thing about music by Jon McLaughlin is people can relate to it. Also, it doesn't hurt that he has a very nice voice, that sings either fun and catchy tunes or slow and sultry. I enjoy the cd very much and I thought Amazon has a great deal with two cds with a video on it. I was very pleased with my order.

I was 13 years old in 1974 when a friend played "Dawn" from this album for me. I had already started to study guitar, and wanted to be just like Jimi Hendrix. But that song completely blew away any ideas I'd previously had abut music. I was shocked; I didn't think that what they were doing was humanly possible. Especially McLaughlin's guitar work.

The whole album seemed to pick up a momentum begun by Miles Davis, and take it into an area of its own. It was important in the development of music. And quite beautiful.

When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now, I will understand and appreciate this recording.

Since I am young, opinionated, closed minded and longing for yesterday's thrill, I do not appreciate this recording.

Whoops, I forgot I am 59 years old and I do appreciate this subtle and complex union of cultures.

I have been a jazz-fusion fan for twenty years, and John Mclaughlin is one of my favorite guitar players. I'm also a fan of the late Jaco Pastorius, and love to hear anything by the late great bass player. I'm familiar with Tony Williams from his performances with John Mclaughlin, and he is an incredible drummer.

Until recently, I never could get hold of this recording, and am pretty pleased with it. It's a dynamic, fusion recording, with stirring live performances by all three performers. I was particularly impressed with Williams, who is a phenomenon in his own right.

Mclaughlin's playing is always inspiring, and is pretty much Mclaughlin standard. Jaco is, well....Jaco. I mean, he can be totally surprising or he can treat the event as kind ... Read More:

Birds of Fire

When I think of jazz fusion, this band comes to mind, along with Return To Forever. But while Return To Forever is liquid, serene, and crystal like, The Mahavishnu Orchestra couldn't be stopped if you tried. From the looks of it, these guys could play with fire, and they often seemed like it did. I can't imagine how awesome these guys are live. Bands can be very explosive live, and these guys, I can just tell, would explode if they were dynamite sticks.

Led by the awesome John Mclaughlin, every single member in this band displays a huge amount of synergy unmatched. Billy Cobham explodes like a grenade, warping the time signatures and lays down a groove needed to carry along everything, along with rick Laird, who is a great bass player. He also is more funky ... Friday Night in San Francisco

There aren't enough superlatives to describe this performance. So I won't even try. I will say that my entire perception of "guitar" was forever changed the first time I heard this album. Not only because of the effortless 200 mph runs but moreso because thee guys can do this while paying attention to and complementing eachother's playing.

Friday Night in San Francisco is a beautiful recording with plenty of raw emotion, despite what some other reviewers have said. Once you have removed your jaw from the floor and pay attention to the phrasing, song structure, sheer improvisation, and interplay of three geniuses in their prime, you will add this to your desert island list.
