Titanic (1997 Original Broadway Cast)

by: Maury Yeston, Judy Blazer, Brian d'Arcy James

Release Date July 01, 1997
I'll admit it: I was coerced into participating in a local production of Titanic The Musical recently and while I never had, nor do I have any desires to perform on stage, I almost reluctantly fell in love with this incredibly moving story that involves an absolutely amazing musical score. I played Benjamin Guggenheim, who along with some of the most famous millionaires in the world (John Jacob Astor, George Widener and the Thayers, literally the Bill Gates and Donald Trumps of their day) died as the Largest Moving Object on the earth slipped beneath the waves, April 15th 1912.

First, one major difference between this re-telling of one of the greatest maritime disasters of all-time and others, there really isn't any two or three ... Read More:

Broadway, My Way

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

This show is a must see on stage and the CD is a must buy. It is romantic, lush, and powerful.

CD-Charts Music : Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series)

Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series)

from: Sony

Release Date October 19, 2004
Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...

Grand Hotel: The Musical - Broadway Cast Recording

by: George Forrest, Maury Yeston

Release Date June 23, 1992
Just hearing the bonus track of David Carroll singing "Love Can't Happen" makes me wonder how BETTER the original cast recording could have been. Brent Barrett vocally sounds shrill and tense in his upper range, marring the official recordings of "Roses at the Station" and "Love Can't Happen". What a tragedy!!! And Carroll's other recording--the Broadway version of Chess--is no longer in print (according to Amazon). This is a double tragedy, because David played Anatoly in the show and gets to sing the powerful "Anthem" at the end of Act 1.

Generally, the score sounds cobbled together with no memorable melodies (other than "Love Can't Happen", which burrows its way into your psyche at the first or second hearing). Perhaps Yeston ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Nine (1982 Original Broadway Cast)

Nine (1982 Original Broadway Cast)

by: Maury Yeston, Raul Julia, Karen Akers

Release Date May 13, 2003
This is the original, and definitive recording of NINE. This is Maury Yeston at his best, with an exquisite original Broadway cast mixing Broadway and New York Cabaret veterans in a show that was part morality play, part fashion show.

I loved the original which I saw on Broadway several times. Included here are the remastered extended versions of the songs. Included are the cut songs from the recent Broadway revival. And thankfully missing the male chorus voices on the London fundraiser version with Jonathan Pryce.

For us musical theatre purists, you still get the weird breath intakes of Karen Akers...and you still hear the pages flip in the orchestra if you are following along in a score, and you still here the conductors baton tap ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Nine - The Musical (2003 Broadway Revival Cast)

Nine - The Musical (2003 Broadway Revival Cast)

by: Maury Yeston, Antonio Banderas, Chita Rivera, Jane Krakowski, Laura Benanti

Release Date June 17, 2003
I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the original, but this revival has won me over. And now I really like both cast albums.
The revival cast is just as good as the original, Banderas well cast as Guido. I prefer Chita Rivera over Lilliane Montevecchi on Follies Bergere,(could never understand what the hell she was singing!) And while Jane Krakowski is not exactly the (sadly) late Anita Morris, she is sexy in a different way and it works. I love Mary Stuart Masterson, who knew she was such a terrific singer?
The whole CD is beautifully done!

CD-Charts Music : Unsung Musicals - The Ultimate Collection

Unsung Musicals - The Ultimate Collection

from: Varese Sarabande

Release Date June 05, 2001
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
