This soundtrack made me want to see the movie again, RIGHT AWAY! The music is fun and even if some of the actors aren't the best singers (how lame would it be if they had voice doubles), it's great! Great movie, great soundtrack!

I received this CD as a gift when I was pregnant with my first child. She is now the oldest of three and is now eleven years old. I played this CD every week throughout my pregnancy. I found it very comforting during a period of my life that seemed like a roller coaster ride. Then when she was born, I played it during a time that I was not feeling well, and I saw my baby daughter turn towards the speaker. I realized that she recognized it and made me feel so good to know that she had a sharp sense of hearing. As a new mom, I was filled with anxieties and with one less was a ray of sunlight for me. Great gift for all mommies to be!

Althought the OBC is the definitive recording of this musical, and although the 1999 T.V. production with Victor Garber and Audra Macdonald is a far better adaptation of the show, this 1982 soundtrack is a delight in its own right. The main reason to buy this album is because of the cast: Carol Burnett, Albert Finney, Anne Reinking, Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry, and Aileen Quinn as the title character. A few songs in the film were actually better on screen than on stage, "It's the Hard-Knock Life" and "I Don't Need Anything But You" being chief among them. The songs added specifically for the film are also a delight, the comic duet between Burnett and Finney, "Sign" being my favorite. "Let's Go To the Movies" is also a classic and fits right ... I agree with most of the reviews - the London staging is the very best of the English language versions of 'Les Miserables'. Forget the New York (Broadway) production, much too polished (sanitized ?). It pales in comparison. The American version benefits from greater sophistication but at the cost of the original book.
HOWEVER, for the first production of this musical, go to the recording on the 'Anthology' (French) label, issued by FGL Productions (the complete 1980 version). It has the cast of the premier, with 'guest appearances' by some big names in yesterday's French popular music, Michel Sardou, Salvatore Adamo, and Michel Delpech. And a list of superb actor-sings, like Maurice Barrier (Valjean), Rose Laurens (Fantine), Yvan ... Read More:

The movie looked promising on every level. Seeing it in a theater, it fell extremely short of my expectations. Good actors who for some reason delivered lines in this movie like they were reading it off a cue card. And played it so "stereotypical" of the "character type" they were portraying it was sometimes "smirk inducing".
That said...in the end it is kinda fun to watch. I bought this soundrack 'cause it is a great sample of some great rock acts of the 80's (without sounding 80's). You've got the "voice" of Contact (who had a hit with "10.9.8"), Marylin Martin (w/ Stevie Nicks doing some of the best b/g vocals on her own song), Maria Mckee doing Tom Petty "justice" yet again.
If you can it's probably best to buy a download (where??) ... Read More:

A delightful mixture of familiar and unfamiliar songs beautifully sung by Jessica Molaskey, joined occasionally by her husband, John Pizzarelli. Accompanied by a great quartet, the music sings and swings. Obscure items like "Happy Habit" and "Everybody Loves Louie" and some originals give the whole disc a fresh flavor.
