This review will probably get a lot of "not helpful" responses, because it does not agree that "Once on This Island" is the best thing for Broadway musicals since sliced bread.
First, and positively, it begins with an excellent story. But in this case, I believe it was the story, not the music, that carried the show to a respectable 469 performances in 1990.
For the most part, I found the music to be repetitive. I felt as if I had listened to the same thing over and over. I also sensed some obvious influences from "Pacific Overtures."
Do not throw the recording away. It is still interesting, especially if you follow the libretto as you listen. The libretto pretty much tells the story, but because of the accents, much is ... Read More:

I'll agree this is nothing new, but this CD has great music on it. Very exciting and fresh, to go with this old story. The vocalists are great, the lyrics fit right into the story, and the orchestrations are wonderful. After listening to this CD I never want to see "A Christmas Carol" any other way. I strongly suggest this CD for everyone. It is a family show, as well as being a wonderful one for new and old listeners. This CD tells the entire story, there no need to read a synopsis because its all here. Favorite Song: "Dancing On Your Grave"

I am a big fan of Arens and Flaherty, and have been since Once on this Island. When they are at their best, they are capable of writing GREAT Musicals, i.e. Ragtime. They are also capable of near misses such as Seusical with some great songs but the multiple story lines just didn't pull in the same direction. At their worst they are capable of drivel such as Lucky Stiff and A Man of No Importance. Dessa Rose falls in the middle of these extemes. The story is powerful and moveing and well musicalized. The music is in service to the story and the performers on this recording are all magnificent, doing some of the best work that they individually have ever done! But.............and unfortunately its a big but, there are only 2 or three major musical moments that heighten the ... Read More:

I've enjoyed the Peter O'Toole, Mark Lynn Baker film since it's first appearance. So, when I discovered this musical version of the fabulous film with the amazing Tim Curry I just had to check it out.
This is a very nice musical..it isn't stunning or amazing but I can imagine it was a very fun show to go see. Most of the music is pretty light hearted but Tim has a couple of good strong songs for that amazing voice of his.
