Even though I given this a Five Star rating, I know that not everyone has the capacity to like Satchmo. However, for those music lovers who love the blues, love classics, and love pioneers of great music, this is an awesome collection from a great artist.
The majority of adults that I know have heard "What a Wonderful World". Even if it was a remake version, it is a great song.
His duet with Bing Crosby, "Gone Fishin'", is one of my favorite summer songs.
Speaking of summer,"When it's Sleepytime Down South.', is a wonderfully relaxing addition as a live cut.

If you like music, you'll like this. If you're curious about jazz, but have no idea where to start, look no further: this is the place. Two masters, combining gloriously to make timeless, magical music.

The Essential Louis Armstrong is a wonderful two CD tribute to one of the greatest musicians who ever lived. The artwork is great and the sound quality is really rather good--even on the older tracks on the first CD.
The first CD starts with "Sugar Foot Stomp." The melody is awesome and the brass never sounded better! The drums and percussion enhance the melody even further. I love Louis on that trumpet! "Heebie Jeebies" is a popular number from that era and when these fine musicians play it, it sparkles like gold even with a bit of surface noise! Louis' trumpet work is exceptional; and the rest of the guys aren't playing too shabbily, either. Moreover, there's also "Basin Street Blues;" this number begins with some great percussion and when ... Read More:

Louis Armstrong is someone I admire for doing what they did consistently. Thus, if you are at all familiar with Satchmo, you have a good idea what this album is all about. There are those who view Armstrong's later years as a time of commercial submission, yet from my perspective, he elevated all the material that he recorded. This set of Disney tunes is no different. I bought it for my toddler son, so that he would be exposed to music of quality, but that would also appeal to him; however, I have no qualms listening to it on my own. My favorite is Louis' take on "Chim Chim Cheree", followed by "The Bare Necessities". If you have kids, make sure they hear this recording!

...this would be one of the 5 CDs I'd take with me out of the 700+ I own. This is standards jazz at its greatest. It not only features two of the best and most iconic jazz vocal interpreters of all time, but also people like Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Herb Ellis as the swinging and relaxed musicians, with Armstrong on the trumpet, of course. Jazz takes many forms as it evolves, but this is the sweet, plain vanilla flavor that never goes out of style. The joy that went into making it is palpable and you can see it just on the cover picture. This is great to play in any setting: car, home, dinner. A great introduction to anyone who is interested in learning about jazz.

Louis Armstrong (Satchmo), does his great versions of these wonderful songs! My kids request this CD on the way to school each morning...and sing along at the top of their lungs. Satchmo sings these songs like only he can. You can't be in a bad mood after listening to this! A great gift. This one is a keeper!

Excellent. No problem with the item. However, for a reason that I do not know of, order was duplicated and I got two DVDs. I have returned the additional one.

The stateside legality of this box set may be a bit dubious- this music is public domain in England, where copyright laws are a bit less stingy- but I don't think that you need to worry about federal agents kicking down your door. Like most import compilations of American pre-war music, these four discs live in a legal grey area here in the states, and it's a fairly light grey, at that. And there's hardly anything immoral about it: The people who created this music don't have much use for royalty payments, what with their being dead and all. In any case, purchasing this box set instead of the inferior and overpriced Sony package sends a good message to the big companies while providing monetary support to one of the greatest reissue labels in the history of mankind. ...
