I purchased this after listening to a few online clips that gave me the impression it was along the line of Levon Helm's most recent release and that it would prominently feature his vocals. I was a bit disappointed to find that not to be the case. It's an O.K. effort but contains many covers and some of those are instrumentals, which to my view are almost filler. If you're looking for some melodic guitar tunes, go for it. If you're looking for raw, roots rock in the Band genre, skip this one.

This is a Levon Helm entry that I missed somewhere along the way. Levon is, without a doubt, one of the great VOICES and DRUMMERS in the history of Rock 'n Roll. His style and presentation of almost thirty years ago is as good as ever and he has not lost his touch, even to this date!!
This CD is a bargain at twice the price! A MUST have for any collection.

About the time that Levon Helm cut this album, he used to perform a couple of times a year at a small club a few blocks from where I lived. I felt extremely fortunate to experience his powerhouse playing in such an intimate setting, and I only feel luckier now that those tours have ceased and the club itself is long gone.

Maybe it was because of that live exposure, but I have to confess I've always far preferred Levon Helm on his own, as opposed to the entire Band. He was the one with the really distinctive voice, and, to me at least, his drumming was more interesting than Robbie Robertson's guitar playing. We are blessed here in the northeast. Almost every Saturday night we can go to Levon Helm's house & hear some of the greatest live music around. That's right, Levon Helm's (you might remember he was in a lil group called The Band) house is open to the public for his Midnight Ramble. You never know who's gonna show up either. On this particular night, little known harmonica player Little Sammy Davis appeared at the Ramble. Sammy escaped from Mississippi when he was about 13 years old & never looked back, working for a time with Earl Hooker. He fell out of the music scene for a while, no doubt to make some $$$ and support his family & we are again blessed when he decided to make upstate New York his home. Great CD.If you are any kind of Levon fan in his time with "The Band," this is a rare treat. An entire album of Levon in fantastic voice, well chosen songs and players bring vibrant classic performances. Unbelievably recorded, and remastered from the original master tapes, ot me this Levon album is on par with his previous work in "The Band," as John Fogerty's "Centerfield" is to his days with Creedence. Many of the songs are muscular and rhytmic blues romps that can make the hair on your arms and neck tingle like "I've Got a Bet With Myself," and "Get Out Your Big Roll Daddy, and the ballad "Even A Fool Would Let Go" is enough to make your heart break before the end of the first chorus. Levon Helm & the RCO All-Stars

Australia's Raven Records has carved out a Rhino-like place in the market for great remastered re-issues and compilations.

In 2008, Raven released a remastered "2-fer" of "LH & The RCO All Stars" and "American Son", a fabulous-sounding bargain. However, Amazon doesn't allow the CD to be listed.

I queried Amazon's catalog department, but they refused to reply with a reason. Royalty/license issues, perhaps?

So, instead of paying a lot of money for this older, single-title disc, try to find the Raven version.

American Son

Levon pulled it all together for this album. The songs are poignant and the playing is crisp. I had a chance to talk to Levon about this record as he was autographing my vinyl copy years ago and we sung a quick duet version of the chorus of "Dance Me Down Easy". There are hooks galore throughout this record but none as strong as the piano on that tune. What a pleasurable, kind, humble and decent man Levon is. Sadly this record is out of print but it's still my favorite one.
