I feel that Theo Bleckmann is a unique vocal artist. His voice as a transparency that floats on the air and doesn't clutter the music as written by the composers he selects to highlight. He has made a name for himself with several collaborative projects with Ben Monder. For my money, this work transcends them all. He brings a wonderful nuance and clarity to these works sung in both German and English. I highly recommend this disc as well as his disc recently released with Meredith Monk. You will not be sorry

The first time I saw Kristin Chenoweth in a movie was the TV "Music Man". Just lately I listened to the "Wicked" soundtrack, and after that, I've been listening to Kristin's CDs whenever I can. This one is a jazzy, Broadway-type CD with fun, engaging songs. She's a different type of singer, and while not everyone might enjoy her voice, I really do. If you like Broadway, jazz, drama, romance, or just fun, catchy songs, this is a CD for you.

Bea Arthur finally releases her Broadway album, and the highlights are too many to mention. My personal favorites were her memories of Angela Lansbury, Talulah, and the very funny (yet not original) jokes (especially the ones about the nun and the cab driver).
The thing is, Bea has never been much of a songstress or vocalist - she has a deep voice with a very flat quality, which makes even her 'high' notes sound about exactly as the same as her low ones. This may or may not be a good thing, but the focus on the CD is the entire show itself. Bea positions herself as host, singer, stand-up comedian, storyteller, and world observer, and all of these roles meld into one another with remarkable ease.

I had never heard, or heard of Lotte Lenya until the opening line of "Seven Deadly Sins" on this priceless reissue combined with the "Berlin Theatre Songs." I was dumbstruck, stunned, and realised I was hearing a singer who actually becomes the character. Song after song--tragedy, irony, gayety, cruelty--delivered with a voice that shudders, groans, or slides as if from experience. And living in 1920's Berlin, much of it likely WAS experience.
Teresa Stratas and Ute Lemper give interesting, sometimes evocative renditions of this music. And Gisela May is a melodramatic mimic of Lenya--devoid of character. Hearing Gisela after Lenya is almost offensive.
BUT, Lenya! To the person who hears Lenya here for the first time: brace ... Read More:

I saw the show in spring of 2007 and loved it. Couldn't believe they hadn't made a soundtrack! I was so disappointed that I couldn't leave the theater with a CD! Then 7 months later I was soooo delighted when Amazon sent me a recommendations email (based on previous purchases) and look at that, they finally DID make a soundtrack! Bought 3: one for me, one for the person I invited to join me, and one for the person who gave me the tickets! Lovemusik: great music and wonderful story.

The wonderful thing about the Threepenny Opera is that every recording is completely different than the previous, yet each one is integral in acheiving an understanding of what this show is about. For instance, I adore the original Broadway recording with Bea Arthur, Lotte Lenya, Scott Merrill, Charlotte Rae and Jo Sullivan the most because of the glorious mono sound and the brilliant performances. But this Donmar version is much closer to the themes and styles of Brecht's sophisticatedly vulgar text.
Some minor quibbles I'd say are the voices, orchestrations and the recording quality (it sounds like it was recorded in an ampitheatre), and I feel as if more clever rhyme-schemes were sacrificed and replaced with lyrics of shock value.
